I don't know about the wetsuit - just make sure you are completely covered & take a big bottle of vinegar with you, just in case (I lived in Darwin for half my life and believe me you don't want to take any chances with them)...this is just box jellyfish....not sure about iriangi (sp??) though.
Stingers predominately stick to the coast, even around the mainland islands off Cairns (Green & Fitzroy) which are right on the edge of the inner reef it is extremely rare to see them. If you are on the outer reef you should be fine, but it is still recommended to wear a stinger suit anyway. They are just a lycra type material, not as heavy as a neoprene wetsuit, so will stretch sufficiently.
Yep go with the stinger suit - they are very sexy :-) You should be able to hire them when you get your snorkling gear. We have been off the reef a few times snorkling and diving, sometime the charter will absolutely recommend a suit other times, depending on the reef and the likelyhood of stingers you can get away without one. Best thing about them is that they stop you getting sunburnt as well - nothing worse then coming home from the reef and all the backs of your legs are sunburnt!!!
