All of what everyone else has said.
Lots of snacks, easy things to give that do not make too much mess. Water bottle.
Toys - we always pack a backpack full of different toys from home, books etc & leave it right by the carseat.......DS1 loves digging into & getting new things out, creates a bit of mess but keeps him quiet.
DVD Player - we have one, we don't put it up when we get going, we try to get as far as we can before we get it out. It's like a 'trump card'.....I don't like them watching it the entire way and we can get a good way without needing it. Also DS1 was never into movies etc at a young age but baby einstein or wiggles etc with lots of music would create some distraction.
CD with kids songs - crazy how the kids will just chill when we have their songs playing and not the radio (on a long trip DH just has to suck that one up!)
Don't forget any favourite things that make it like home, a blanket or doll or perhaps even a sippy cup, it all helps.
Love the idea for incase someone gets sick, never thought of that!
