I've also heard that an ammonia based cleaner will deter them as well, as it smells like cat pee.
When baiting the traps, we use peanut butter as they can't just pinch it without setting off the trap like they do with cheese.

Peppermint oil. We are getting some repair work done on our upstairs bathroom's plumbing and the walls and ceiling downstairs are exposed and we have been noticing mice. DH & I have put peppermint oil EVERYWHERE and it seems to have done the trick. Thankfully, the real estate is going to do something about the mice in the ceiling & walls
