how do i register a business name? how much does that cost?
Mine cost me $90, plus $3 for laminating the certificate and another $5 for the xtract of particulars to prove I own the name, for opening a business bank account with. (that is in WA)
Look it up on the net, if you google business name registration {in your state} you should get something. In WA it is the Department of Consumer and Employment Protection.

around how much does it cost for domain names?
From memory, mine was about $15 a year...

How much does it cost to get a abn and how do i go about doing this?
ABN is FREE - go to the ATO site and follow some links

is there any particular order i should be doing this is is there anything else i shoudl be thinking off?
MUST have reg business name before you open, MUST have ABN before you begin trading....most places for wholesale require a ABN as proof for a wholesale account.
Need t think about GST reg - if you arent going to be turning over a lot of money, then probably not worth it - but check out the ATO website or give them a call.
Are you a food based business? they require a whole heap of other requirments and registartions.

    HTH=
Other than that - good luck!!

If you're talking about a domain name for a website...depends on what domain name you are after (i.e. if you are happy with just a .com or want a .com.au - which you will have to have an ABN for) prices also vary between suppliers, hosting is a pretty cut-throat business so generally you will pay much the same, but at the same time some suppliers are cheaper than others.

You'll also need a webhosting plan, to host the website from. To start off with you probably won't need a big plan, again shop around as there are some dodgy webhosts out there and others that will charge you big $$$ for not a lot...DF is in the business and it's surprising how many "kids" are out there trying to make a quick buck You also want to make sure you are going to receive adequate support from them!

Check out the ATO website for details on getting an ABN etc. I would be getting your business name registration & ABN sorted out first, then worry about hosting and domain names etc once that is all organised.

**I do apologise if I got the wrong end of the stick and there is another "domain" that I am not aware of that you were referring to....just blame my preg brain for that!

Don't get caught out like I did. I registered a business name and then later discovered that there was a trademark on a similar name in the same category of my business. If my brand got big, down the line I could have been forced to stop using my name so I changed it. This meant buying new domain names, and regsitering a new business name, all money wasted.
So, my tip, is check out trademarks with IP Australia, before registering your business name.
Good luck, I hope you do well. What is your product?

whats the diff between trademark and ip trade mark and then registered business name? Btw thanks for that info
Trademark comes from IP Australia, so I guess they are the same. You can register a business name and they don't check for trademarks on the name. They only check for registered business names for the combination of words that you give them. Here is my example. I wanted the name "Smooch", for my lingerie label. I did a search of business names and there were a couple of businesses with the name "Smooch something", and one called "Smooch", but there were no "Smooch Lingerie". I registered the business name "Smooch Lingerie", and they did their check and it was all fine.
Anyway, long story short, I later discovered that there was a trademarked company in the area of fashion called "Smooch". I could have operated as a registered business "Smooch Lingerie", but I couldn't trademark it because lingerie fits into clothing category, and Smooch was already trademarked there. Down the line, if my brand had become well known, the owner of the "Smooch" trademark, could say that they did not want me to use "Smooch" anymore, and my whole branding wold have to change. If they had been "Smooch" in a different category, it might have been different.
So, I changed the name to Lady Smooch and had to pay for everything again plus I have now trademarked the name.
If you are choosing a combination of words, then you will be more likely to have an original name. Because I was really just using the one word, it's more likely that someone will have thought of it before and trademarked it.
    Hope that makes sense.

This is so true. When you read webhosting forums, you can see the amount of kids out there starting out with their reseller accounts.

Squidipa - I've pm'd you a website that might be useful, altho now I've looked at the date of this thread, it might be a bit late, you've probably answered all your questions already

Squidipa, are you having a website designed? Your designer will usually be able to host your site too. But as ss_storm said, you need to be sure they will give adequate support. So far, so good with mine.
