We got sand from a garden supply place too, half a load or something and it was about $30 or something. We have weed matting at the bottom of ours to stop the grass growing up through it, and then just cover it with shade cloth to keep the cats out, (and we dont even have cats) cos cat poo in the sand pit is gross!

If you want to be cheeky KL then get some from the beach. I know heaps of people who do that. They put tubs in the back of their 4WD's and then shovel away. I would recommend a cover to keep out nasties and remember to check regularly for spiders they like the sand pit to.

I have 2 cats and when our neighbours got a sand pit I politely suggested to them that they might want to think about getting a cover for it. My cats don't go outside much anymore as they are too old and lazy but if I was a cat a new sand pit with lovely fresh sand would mean just one thing.....TOILET!!

    Kids do love them though.
