I'd probably go for tiles over laminate. I put down laminate through my house and don't love it - it's ok, but it does get dirty looking quickly like already said. I couldn't do tiles in my house because of the floors so that wasn't an option.
Perhaps you can get a nice carpet square edged for the play room?
