Re: Homebirth General Discussion #20
Shhh... but we did find out! It is a secret IRL that we have found out at all and I'm nervous that people could stalk me on here so I hate to even admit it. We had a surprise for the other two and decided to change it up this time but we don't want to tell people till the birth.
-
Re: Homebirth General Discussion #20
So stoked that the scan was awesomely awesome.
How do you feel about finding out? Does it feel different? I always wondered whether i could hold out until birth but always found out at the 20 week scan.
-
Re: Homebirth General Discussion #20
I feel really good about it. I was a little anxious about feeling let down that we'd taken away the surprise for the birth and I guess we'll see how I feel about that after the birth. But at the moment I feel happy that we had the experience of not finding out and happy that we've found out this time :)
-
Re: Homebirth General Discussion #20
i don't regret NOT finding out for #3 (we didn't find out sex for any of them), but i don't think i would have regretted finding out this time either. It might have helped me in the last few weeks, which were harder 3rd time around. If i did find out i would have liked to have kept it a secret though, special secret shared between myself and baby.
-
Re: Homebirth General Discussion #20
I'm so tempted to find out but also really don't want to. Not that I think I'll regret it but I have a weird idea in my head that if I find out it will be one sex and if I wait it will be the other (does that make sense lol) crazy woman here! And I know at birth I won't care what it is but I may before hand cause ill have too much time to think.... And yes I do know that the sex can't change it is what it's is and I love it so do I need to know..... I almost hate the fact that we get the choice :) once the 20week scan if over and I haven't found out ill be ok, I always want to know before the scan.
I brought a 2nd hand pram the other day. A strider dlx travel system. I am a baby wearer but think little tummy bug is going to be pulled in and out of a car up to 10 times a day between Kindy and school drop offs! So I got the capsule that fits into the pram. We'll see how much I use it. This also continues my record for having as many prams as children to my husbands horror. His reasoning is I baby wear and get the children walking as soon as they can so hardly ever use a pram. But hey then it will have great re sale value hehe. Also thinking of getting an ergo??? I'm a HAB fan.... Thoughts?
Also we are planning on going camping when tummy bug is between 0-2weeks old depending on when it arrives. It was already booked and I love the idea of early morning beach walks in my baby moon, we did the same when dd3 was 3 weeks old. And the pram came with a bassinet so I wouldn't have to take anything extra of it.
Sorry you lady's have to listen to my ramblings. I presume once we tell the kids on the 23rd then the whole world will know shortly after and I will be able to talk to people in real life.
I am getting worried about people reaction to number 5...... I know you are all nice but what would you like if you had a friend having her fifth?
Also we figured out that this one wont start school until Dd1 is in year 10! CRAZY :)
Please someone else have a ramble now :)

Re: Homebirth General Discussion #20
i was one of 5, as was my partner. i loved it growing up, and still do, so i would think it is great. just checked your ticker - both dh and i also had 10 year gaps from #1 to#5!
i have been loving the hab, but also have started using ergo occasionally when i just want something quick to put on. i dont really like the newborn insert, but can still wear her with a blanket and using one hand to support her. if i am wearing her for a long time, i prefer the hab for now but she hasn't cracked 5 kg yet. loved the ergo when my others got bigger.
i would love to get a great pram, but will prob just do with what i have. ;(
-
Re: Homebirth General Discussion #20
Hoti look on eBay or gum tree so many good 2nd hand ones!
I don't like having to support bubs while in a carrier hence my love of HABs. Will get hot fairly quickly too so may not want to have to worry about ergo inserts...... ?

Re: Homebirth General Discussion #20
Hey there birthers!
Do I just jump in on the chat? I don't know the protocol lol...
I have been in my "Due In Sept" thread, but we have *just* decided this will be a HB. I have already been booked into the caseload midwives program at my local hospital and I've had a few appts, but I have been chatting with my MW from my last birth (HB but ended in hospital) and we have worked out a way to make a HB possible for us! I am beside myself with excitement!
My MW lives about 2.5 hours away, so my doula is going to come in handy, she is 15 mins down the road. Because MW is so far away my appts will be very spaced out, and I need to have Shared Care with a GP. My MW is medicare eligible, honestly it's the only way I could afford a HB. So I am looking for a HB friendly/supportive GP. I have one lead so far...
Looking forward to prepping for a HB again! I found my lists from last time and I am excited to get to put it to use this time (hopefully).

I finished making my prayer flags last night. I will just pin the calico on, so I can use it in my LO's room, or pass it on to another mamma if I want. What do you all think? Pretty huh!
Meow- we didn't find out for our first two, but decided to with this one. Mostly because I felt really emotionally invested and in the gender and I didn't want to process disappointment at the birth. Also I had VERY strong feelings about the gender, which turned out to be true :). I do love a surprise tho :) in fact I love a surprise! But I wanted to know for me and my girls who were begging me for a baby brother. I'm happy :). I didn't spend this pregnancy half in hope half in dread.
And welcome phy! Happy planning!

Re: Homebirth General Discussion #20
Tegam - I technically didn't transfer, I had to be induced :( I was over for dates but as my MW is under the medicare scheme, she is bound by restrictions too, so once I reached a certain point, I had to liaise with an OB, I was sent for a scan which showed very low amniotic fluid and the OB requested I be induced. I was so devastated. The OB was extremely respectful of my HB wishes and followed my transfer plan, which was nice. I had only two sets of gel spaced far apart, by the time was up and I was due to be seen again, my waters broke. I laboured alone (not really understanding that I was in labour, I had sent my MW and doula home, DP tried to nap), I woke DP up 5 hours later and asked him to get my MW here as I wanted all.of.the.drugs. She arrived 45 mins later, I was in second stage, hospital MW was all worried (the baby's heart beat is dropping, I'm getting the OB) and I roared DS out with only DP and my MW in the room. So in the end, it wasn't too bad, I went home 6 hours later with my slightly calcified placenta and a beautiful DS :)
Hoping I can avoid that this time around, time will tell!

Re: Homebirth General Discussion #20
Tegam- it is such a nice feeling isn't it. I am trying to enjoy it as much as I can.
Had a birth planning meeting today. Everyone came and it was lovely to see everyone.
Mw had a feel of my babies position. I wondered how low he is, cos people are commenting that I have "dropped". Anyway Mw couldn't palate the babies head in the pelvis, cos he is so deep down. She thinks she can just feel his shoulder at the brim. So looks like this baby is locked and loaded. I still don't think I will have him till he is 40 weeks, but then third babies like to be cheeky don't they. That being said neither me or my mother or sister have had a baby born before 40 weeks so far, in ten pregnancies between us, so I don't imagine this will change.
-
Re: Homebirth General Discussion #20
Wow bella you must be uncomfy! Third babies are tricky, my per labour was long and tiring with DS! And they say 4th babies are like your first again = true for me.
Tell us more about your meeting? Please!
-
Re: Homebirth General Discussion #20
Oh um ok if you like. We talked about roles and what I wanted done. Some stuff was technical in case of a transfer. Because my kids doula is an emergency nurse, she would be with me, dh and Mw helping me or baby and photographer would call 000, that sorta thing.
Went over where I will set up birth space so photographer could look at lighting in the room and what I am happy with. We talked about simple things like getting someone to come thru and pick up dirty clothes if they are on the floor if I or hubby haven't done it. Just cos I know it will drive me bonkers! Lol! And I don't want a mess in all of the photos videos and I can just imagine the commentary going on in my mind when labouring if I can see it there but am not able to come out of labour land to deal with it.
We talked about silly stuff like how I wanna put up my hair lol! My Mw joking that she never thinks of what she wears but since my last video was shown at loads of conferences, she 'might' slap some makeup on if their is time. Silly stuff I know, but we are women and so lots of silly, vain stuff in-dispersed between the serious discussions.
We talked about what authority my transfer plans give my Mw in advocating for my baby, should I not be able to actively participate in decision making and baby care if I am unconscious.
We discussed my eldest daughters participation and making sure that everyone understands that I want her in the room if she is coping with my labour etc
After the others went we just had a normal antenatal appointment and she checked baby and listened to me talk about my fears and pains. I am quite sore and having to take a fair bit of panadiene to keep functioning. But I know it is all part of the process and I don't want to wish it away because it hurts. So taking the pain killers allows me to get some sleep and keep smiling. I will see her again in ten days. She saw me about four days early this week instead of next Tuesday because she forgot to leave the birth pool last week at my mother blessing, so to get back on track for weekly appointments we will stretch it out a little.
There you go Tegam, loads more than you wanted to know. I'm feeling very loved and supported by my community. My hubby is doting on me too and we went out for dinner last night. He is off from when I am 41 weeks, but won't do any oncall shifts from when I am 40 weeks to make sure if I go on time he isn't making it hard on rostering for his colleagues. And now we just keep getting ready.
Sorry, what a mammoth post!
-
Re: Homebirth General Discussion #20
Oh bella, sounds beautiful! What a great support network you have! If your video has been watched at conferences is there a way we can see it? I've been watching heaps of YouTube births and get so frustrated at the mess around the house! I end up having a rant to one of the support people just sitting there.... 'ah couldn't you just pick that up for thè mumma' hehe I just haven't thought much about the birth yet.... Still month away thankfully :)
-
Re: Homebirth General Discussion #20
My birth preparations were quite casual*, so its lovely to hear more details of your meeting. I would want to make sure the clothes etc were picked up too! I see all the beautiful birth vids, and i wonder if other people's houses are always like that, or if they were running around in early labour cleaning up the kids' mess from that day. It makes me feel better that their is some planning in getting the vids and pics gorgeous.
I planned what to wear etc this time because i wanted some photos, but unfortunately the photos didn't work ;( Person taking photos thought flash was annoying baby so turned it off so all photos are black. i would have put lights on or whatever to get at least one or two nice photos.
* not quite the right word, but can't think of how to explain it.
-
Re: Homebirth General Discussion #20
Tegam if you go to YouTube and google madel e l i e n e s B i r th you should see it come up. It is by G r e g arious P each. It is a hbac birth and it is in black and white. Make sure you have tissues tho yes? And hot1 I am gonna have fairy lights for illumination. So even if there isn't heaps of light, there will be some. I bought some ages ago, that have little paper lanterns on them that are cute. And my photographer is really skilled at getting good photos in low light. Oh and tegam, make sure you down load it in the hd version, cos it looks a lot better :)
And yeah it was pretty causal really. I mean we talked about lotsa things, but really mostly we just chatted around things. Nothing is set in stone. One of the great things about having the same team is that they already get me, we just talked a bit about logistics etc.
-
Re: Homebirth General Discussion #20
Omg Bella is that your birth? It's one of my favourites and I've watched it a million times ♡
-
Re: Homebirth General Discussion #20
Yes that's me :) Georgia did a beautiful edit. She has a real knack for documenting the way it is all about family. And she was beautifully respectful of my space. My Mw was surprised at some of the shots she managed to get, as she was unaware of her in the room.
Georgia is coming again as long as I don't birth on the 31st of may as she is racing down and back to Melbourne for a photo shoot with her baby. We will have a replacement photographer if that happens. I'm ok with it even if it isn't ideal.
-
Re: Homebirth General Discussion #20
Ohhhh bella talk about the suspense now, I'm going to hold off watching until I can watch on the big computer in HD and have a good cry! I can't wait.
Hoti I get the *casual comment but it not being the right word **** not sure how to to describe my other births but this probably best fits. I'm trying to think about planning more this time but just draw a blank.... Too early maybe?
Have NEVER had a photo taken of me in labour, I ask DH if he could please take photos and some video this time and he said 'no way, as if you'd want that' and I said' we'll actually I really do, and I change it to - you will take photos and some video this time it's important to me' he said 'oh ok' so fingers crossed. I've never had a 2nd midwife at a birth in fact my midwife didnt make it to my Homebirth but do they take photos for you if you ask them, I want a total hands off and NO ONE talk to me when I'm birthing so couldn't they take photos?
-
Re: Homebirth General Discussion #20
I think that they can take photos and will if you ask and they don't feel like as if it will interrupt their first priority which is focusing on you and the baby. You probably need to have a talk about them with it. And or look around for someone who you could invite as a silent observer who could photograph. Some photographers who are just starting out in birth photography, are willing to do it cheaper whilst they get some photos in their portfolio. Or just a friend you could trust in the space.... I def think that even if your mw's say that they want to concentrate when you are pushing baby out, they could either take some when you are labouring or remind your dh to take some. If I didn't have a photographer, I would write it down everywhere to remind my dh to do it.
-
Re: Homebirth General Discussion #20
It's not sitting well in my mind having a Mw in the room when I birth (or outside as I hope) so the thought of second Mw and a friend or photographer, no way. But a Mw there in the background taking a photo, feeling like the focus is off her in a birthing sense.... I don't know if I'm making sense. Anyway I'm sure DH understands now how important just a few photos mean to me.
-
Re: Homebirth General Discussion #20
At my last birth my secondary MW took some photos- she enjoys it so she was more than happy to do it. She took photos right through the actual birth while my primary MW was focussing on me. We had a student MW who took some video for us too so they were both the paparazzi in the room and I didn't have a clue until I after the birth and I was holding DS2 in the pool still and I noticed the camera at one point then.
DYING to watch your video when I have a moment Bella!!! I'd love to find a professional photographer this time. Just not sure if it's appropriate for us as we're trying to limit the amount of people there so as not to overwhelm my DS1 and give him the space to be part of the birth. Fingers crossed. I think I found a post-natal doula who does birth photography and we want to hire a post-natal doula this time so she could be perfect.
-
Re: Homebirth General Discussion #20
Im looking forward to watching some great birth vids, so have put yours on my list bella. But will have to wait until im alone and can get right involved.
Im the opposite with birth photography... i didnt have anyone with Spock, and cant see me having anyone with Quark. For me it is a private peraonal thing i dont want to show anyone. Its just between me and my baby and select couple of people i let in. But thats my personal.choice and my views. And some people do get some amazing images
-
Re: Homebirth General Discussion #20
TT I don't think I'd show anyone my photos. I just want them for me :) but boy like you I am SO glad that people get photos and videos and share them. Wow I love a good birth photo :)
And yes totally agree I have no plans to have anyone extra at the birth that's for sure. Sneaking outside and popping a baby out with no one knowing is my plan :) whether I tell my midwife this or not is yet to be seen
-
Re: Homebirth General Discussion #20
Bella your meeting sounds great. I have mine in the next couple of weeks. I am looking forward to the pool being dropped off and really being able to set up my birth space. I can't believe how low your little man is, mine has just engaged which I wasn't expecting. I can't wait to see photographs from your little mans arrival.
Being a photographer myself I will most definitely be having a photographer their to capture everything. I have also had 2 lots of maternity photos done and plan to do a couple myself this week.
There will be quite the audience for my birth lol, I have 2 MW's, a student MW, my hubby and 2 kids, a support person for the kids and my photographer. Thankfully the room I am birthing in has a door and I am fine with asking people to leave if I need too. I think it also helps that I know everyone personally and feel like I have a lot of support from each of them.
-
Re: Homebirth General Discussion #20
Yeah I find that even with people there, everyone knows not to hover. Last time I think my photographer was in the room for all of 20 mins tops. There certainly wasn't much more than that of footage. And I totally get why you girls want to privacy. I didn't even really know if I wanted a photographer there last time... I was offered by my photographer, as I was one of the first in her portfolio and we are friends. The only thing that allowed me to say yes to her, was the fact that we were friends and I knew she 'got birth'. There was no flash photography at all, and no interuptions. She was like a doula in the space, but with a camera in her hand.
-
Re: Homebirth General Discussion #20
Bella your meeting sounds lovely. I had lots of photos taken last time, my Doula took them and so did my mum and to be honest I didn't notice anyone with a camera only after bubs was born. I love my birth photos and I got through them often with my boys. I definitely want photos this time too but we are not having a doula this time so I'll need to sort something out with my midwife although my mum will be here again too.
I've had my 20 wk scan...and found out the gender....I'm ecstatic to say we are having a little lady!!! I am beyond excited and I still can't really believe it. After two crazy loud boys I can't wait for a little girl!!

Re: Homebirth General Discussion #20
I had lots of amateur photos and video for DD2's birth, just taken by my doula, Mum, or second m/w. I had big plans for DD3's birth, my sister was coming to do professional video. But the only photos I have are afterwards when my doula arrived and helped me settle onto the bed. Since it was only DP and I there was no chance! I feel a bit ripped off, but clearly DD3 was shy. I did get my sister to do a post-birth video and I re-told the story. I'll give her photos I have and she's putting something together anyhow.
Congrats lady-bug on your little girl!

Re: Homebirth General Discussion #20
39 weeks now, baby not far away.... BH are almost constant thru the day and night now, which is tiring. I keep getting woken with a full bladder during BH over night, which is making sleep very difficult to come by. I have a spotless house, cos I just can't stand the mess and so everything that can be done, has been done! Well nearly... I have a few more jobs I could do.
My back is really starting to hurt! I want heat packs, but we got rid of our microwave! Gah! And it feels quite wasteful of electricity to have it going just for the time it takes to heat a hot pack... Anyone got any great ideas on how to heat them without turning on the oven? I might just have to use the kettle and use hot water bottles instead.
I am getting to the "I'm past it" stage. I am really tired and just can't be arsed anymore. It has arrived so much earlier than my last pregnancy. Maybe just cos I am so tired. I keep thinking 39+5-6. But no one in my family has had a baby born before 40 weeks in the past 10 pregnancies, so it is unlikely.
Anyway. Not to much longer....
-
Re: Homebirth General Discussion #20
Oh bella you can hear how tired you are. But I think you are amazing for only just getting over it. I fear how early that will hit me this time. I hope this baby breaks the mould for you and comes before 40weeks :) The Braxton hicks sound relentless, I have them every hour or so at the moment but not painful. The ultrasound lady could see them thru my scan and commented or how tight and well my uterus still contacts after so many children. For a while she thought that the placenta was close to the cervix but it was only when I was contracting :) thank goodness.
I was thinking hot water bottles or someone lending you a microwave? Someone night have a spare in their caravan or something? I find a hot water bottle or wheat pack clear up near my hoohar (sp) so nice late in pregnancy.
Hugs and I can't wait to see your BA
We have started to tell people. So far about its about 50/50 those that are nice and those that are rude. DH parents were as expected. Not sure where we will go from here with them. I'm not feeling very warm and fuzzy towards them that's for sure!! Some friends have been so beautiful tho so that's been nice. Frankly I don't care anymore. We aren't asking anyone else to raise our kids or pay for them so everyone can take a leap off the nearest bridge.
Thinking of cancelling my Mw appointment tomorrow, just not feeling it and I like those appointments to be a high point not a negative.
Got my first essay back 68/100 two marks off a distinction. Two marks. Not sure if I'm happy/relieved I passed or now more nervous about my next essay..... Ahhhhh what mark would I have been happy about lol!
