Will he ever wean???

Wow I never thought I'd be wondering this from the child who once went through so much breast refusal
Anyway Ned is nearly 17 months old and loves his BFs. He has one early morning (around 5ish), a quick one before day nap at about 11.30 and quite a big one before bed around 7.30. We have been moving around for the last 8 weeks (no longer than 6 days at one place) and he was really unsettled and started feeding through the night again. He's feeding roughly twice at night at the moment. He has his feed and then usually goes down again no probs. If I try to settle without the feed he screams and screams and screams. Obviously he doesn't need this at this age, but a few questions...

Will he stop these night feeds by himself again or is it a 'bad habit'?
Will he ever wean himself?
I STILL haven't got AF back either and we are (slowly) thinking about TTC again. Should I be worried and see the doc? If so what tests can they do?

All the help I can get would be much appreciated. Barb????

I would think that he would wean himself off the night feeds again once he feels more settled. I don't let DS feed through the night now, but I know he can resettle just by being next to me. If it was screaming sessions.. I'd be quick to give him the boob back through the night.

Yes, he will wean himself one day! Unless you plan on feeding him on his 21st? heheh.

As for AF - it's normal for AF to be gone that long, I doubt it warrants visiting a GP. Jump in the TTC while breastfeeding thread.. some have been able to chart & fall pg without AF (I think!)

Thanks Liz. Yeap he's been having BB at night again because of all the changes he's been through. As you say, hopefully he'll stop himself when he realises we're not packing our suitcases again!
So funny to see and hear family/friends reaction when they realise he is STILL BF. And yeap my standard response now is 'yeah he'll probably still be going when he's 30'.

Soph, isn't it great that he is feeding so well. Well done for getting past all your problems. I don't have any answers for you. Obviously he will wean sometime, but if you want to TTC before then, that leaves you with a hard decision (unless you are able to fall pg without weaning). Hopefully AF will show up soon so you don't get to that point. GL!

soph, hiya gf, i never thought i would see you post this!!!!! wow well done. you could start to do the ol, never offer, never refuse. they do wean themselves but it might not be at an age that you are happy with you could look at the ABA website for suggestions, or Dr Sears has some great gentle suggestions. good luck

Soph I don't have any advice for you hun, but I just wanted to say that I had to laugh when I saw the thread title and who had posted it!!!!!!! I'm glad that Ned is still enjoying his booby, but I hope you can get it to a level that you're all happy with Are you off the Motilium now?

Beckles - Yeap who would have thought eh? Honestly you were my rock many times when I thought BF had nearly come to an end.

Janie - Yeap off the motilium. It was hard - psychologicially more than anything but I did it gradually. I was wondering whether that could have been holding AF back (a side effect can be irregular cycles) and I was losing HEAPS of weight and still eating like there's no tomorrow so was a bit concerned of what it may have been doing to me (and Ned). Seems to be no probs with supply.

Ok I'll just keep going........I can always look at schools close by if I need to run down and feed him at lunch time

Nothing much to add but I could have written your post.
Toby's the same age and does everything your little guy is doing, exactly. I've always said I'd let him self wean but I can't see it happening for a long time so I'm kind of rethinking that plan. He is still very much into it.
If you're still feeding that frequently it's not surprising your AF hasn't come back yet - I only got mine back last month. It's nothing to worry about because while he's still feeding around the clock it will generally stay away.
Mine only came back because for about a month Toby was sleeping through....didn't last long lol.
