IVF and BFPs - how many eggs/ transfers did it take before you got yours?

Our FS always told us 1/5 chance every transfer.
For us personally it was 3 transfers for 2 children. First transfer was FET (5 frosties only one survived the thaw) due to cancelled cycle as a result of OHSS = BFN. Then fresh cycle 2 embryos transferred resulting in DD1. 1 frosty left from that cycle = DD2.

shezzabelle - aren't the statistical odds of a successful transfer ending in a BFP different to how many times it might take?? Iykwim....

For me it took 7 transfers and 13 embies. My girls are number 12 and 13, but I only discovered right before my 6th transfer I have one of the thrombophilia blood clotting disorders and after being treated with clexane, low dose aspirin and predinisine I got my BFP.

Since then I have had 2 transfers, one pregnancy but blighted ovum, one bfn and one natural pregnancy. My odds seem to have improved with my diagnosis.

So my point is I think it depends on your issues. If it Is mfi I think you tend to get your BFP earlier. If it is unexplained the same unless it is something they haven't yet diagnosed. If you know what the issue is and can treat it you might get your BFP sooner. It is just all so individual and sometimes all so random. GL to everyone trying xx

One transfer with two embryos brought us our 1 baby.

We only got 5 eggs at EPU and only 3 of those fertilised. The non transferred embryo didn't survive long enough to be frozen.

Hasn't been the case for me! I think it's all pretty random, although if there is something undiagnosed that can definitely slow things down.

I was lucky, we got our BFP on our first transfer. Day 3 embryo.

We had one transfer and got pregnant straight away, but our issue was male infertility. (Only have the one child). Day 5 embie.

We did 1 cycle of IVF and had 2x 3 day embies transfered. That resulted in a singleton pregnancy and our 4.5 month old DD2 is playing on her play mat now lol.

We are heading back in December for our first FET.

1st fresh transfer ( 2 x blastys) BFP- misc @ 5 wks
1st FET- BFN
2nd fresh transfer ( 2 blastys)- chem preg
2nd FET- BFP- misc 8wks

So i can get bfps from ivf- just not a really sticky one yet.

i got my BFP on the 7th transfer

with my first full stim cycle IVF/ ICSI i had 11 eggs with 7 embies. I had one fresh transfer and then 5 frozen ( one didn't survive thaw) ALL BFN

then i had to wait to do a second full stim cycle and got 12 eggs, 7 embies and got my BFP on the fresh transfer.

I was much more relaxed this time, but my FS said that most women take 2 full stim cycles to get BFP. I wanted to give up after first cycle but i am so glad we went back.

I did acupuncture this time the day after transfer and took some time off, felt a lot better emotionally and i think all these things helped

I had 11 embies transferd all up over 7 actual transfers over 12mths.

I got BFP's on the 2, 3, 5 and 7 transfers but the last one is the only one that stuck around.

As annoying as it sounds FS kept saying for us it was a matter of the right embie....and he is probally right....it might be in your first cycle or not but we just had to believe we would get there eventually.

My understanding is that there is a 90% chance of falling pregnant (implantation) on your first, second or third cycle (IVF Australia).
Try not to focus too much on the statistics - everyone is individual and the way our bodies react is unique. While it is useful to know the stats cos it does help ground you, its also really important to have hope! Stay hopeful

Sorry Veronica but that is very far from correct. I wish it were true. There are so many variables that need to be taken into account - maternal age, weight, reason for infertility, egg quality, protocol....

I am not sure where you heard that stat but, sadly, it's not right.

Eta: perhaps the stat is, if it's going to work there's a 90 per cent chance it will be within three cycles??? Something like 40 per cent of couples that go through IVF wont end up with a child at the end

I must be a freak, 1st fresh transfer I got my BFP (although I don't have DS1 here due to an unrelated problem) then I had one frozen embie from that cycle, and that resulted in another BFP and that's DS2 here safely earth side. I think b/c I've had two successful cycles, I'm really scared of what might happen next time I do IVF. Might not be so lucky then! Plus I'm 3 years older.......GL hunni, they told me it takes an average of 3 to 4 cycles to get a BFP.

I had success on my first cycle. The FS told me that she thought it could take about 6 cycles. I had a 2 day embryo transferred. I had a lot of diagnostic tests done prior to IVF so I had treatment for some of my problems prior to IVF. I had thyroid problem, progesterone deficiency and a small amount of endo. I also did acu and saw a naturopath for about 6 months prior to my first IVF. I do feel really lucky and agree it's like lotto. I thought if I invested in testing and complimentary treatment I could up my odds, but who really knows if all of this helped. It could have just been the one good emby in the batch. Next time I might not be so lucky.

It must definitely depend on the reason you are having IVF.

Our DD was conceived during our second IVF cycle. From the two cycles we got 32 eggs, which created 17 embryos suitable for PGD testing, and of those 17 only one single embryo was chromosomally normal (our precious DD). She was implanted and luckily she's now our sweet almost-10 month old.

At our transfer appointment I asked the nurse what the chances are of her resulting in a baby and I was told 20%. BUT, here's where that gets really subjective. The 20% that we were quoted is basically the "blanket" number that covers all couples that go through IVF. So, if you take into account everyone that goes through IVF, the average chance of a single embryo transfer resulting in a baby is apparently about 20%. That number didn't take into account the fact that in our particular circumstance we both had proven fertility (I'd previously been pregnant naturally twice which resulted in my DS), I had no issues that lessen the chance of implantation and pregnancy (like hormonal problems), we already knew our embryo was chromosomally healthy (which is not the case unless you have PGD and and I was told that up to 50% of embryos at day 3 are chromosomally abnormal. Yup! That high! I was stunned!) and we were basically going through IVF for PGD reasons, not fertility reasons. So our odds were surely much higher than the 20% we were told. Then compare that to some of the amazing ladies on here that go through IVF time and time again for some pretty major reasons and their chances seem to be much lower (very sadly) than the 20%.

I actually wish that the IVF clinics would do some more research into the "real" chances based on particular circumstances. It would still be hard for them to make an accurate "guess", but at least it might be a little closer than what some people are told and give people more real expectations that they hope for.
