Other operations during or around IVF cycles (eg wisdom teeth)

I am booked in to get my wisdom teeth out on May 4, but that falls right where I want to be starting my next IVF cycle. Just wondering if there is any reason why this might interfere with going ahead with IVF before I speak to the clinic.

I would imagine that possibly if I got an infection afterwards that wouldnt be good and perhaps they would be able to do my epu? Has anyone else been in this situation???

I can't help sorry Bec, but from the limited knowledge I have got, I wouldn't think it would be a problem. I mean you can even be on antibiotics when you are pg, so even if you got an infection it would still be ok.
My sympathies are with you though hun, I had my wisdom teeth out and I felt awful. tell your DH to take extra good care of you
I'm sure your FS can help alleviate any fears you have about the timing.

Thanks Jo - I ended up calling my clinic and they said definitely not during the cycle. Damn.

Thats interesting Bec. Did they give you a definite reason, or were they just concerned in case there were complications?

Are you going to do the teeth and skip the cycle, or vice versa? I think the teeth should probably come first - they are awful things and if you can get that done and dusted, then you can look onwards and upwards.

Was it a concern for the wisdom teeth operation or any operation at all?

All I can think is that for having your wisdom teeth surgically removed - the breathing tube goes through your nose so they can work in your mouth. I imagine that then trying to follow up with a tube down your throat for the EPU - they now have to deal with swelling and stitches and a very sore mouth. It could also be that the drugs used for the anaesthetic may interfere with the stim or down reg parts of the cycle - but it's ok for pick up as that's over already?

Sorry you have to make a decision, Bec.

They said anything that involves a general anaesthetic is out during the cycle, but particularly the teeth as the risk of infection is high and generally its a pretty painful thing to do when in an ivf cycle.

My wisdom teeth arent actually causing me pain but they are pushing my teeth together so I need to get them out at some point but probably dont need it right now. Although if it works, then 9 months of not getting them done could completely stuff up my jaw. Decisions, decisions....

I don't know whether this helps but I had two operations done instead of going through an IVF cycle - I had my tonsils removed, and then my gall bladder removed.

I suppose my thinking was that I only wanted my body to go through one trauma at a time, which is why I went through with the operations. Also in my head I thought that if these areas were causing issues in one area of my body, they may also be affecting other areas.

It did affect us negatively initially because when I came back the donor that we were using was unavailable - however this worked for us long term as our friend stepped forward.

If it were me (and I've had all my wisdom teeth removed as all four were impacting on the tooth in front) I would be getting them removed, recover, and go again.

Bec, the issue with wisdom teeth pushing on your other teeth is one best not left for too long. My sister had the same thing - she had no pain, but the allignment of her teeth gradually got worse and worse until she needed to have the wisdom teeth out and then needed to spend years as an adult with braces getting her teeth re-straightened. It was way more painful and a much longer process to go through it as an adult rather than as a teenager. I'd already done the braces thing as a teen... and then I had the same issue with impacted wisdom teeth, but fortunately got them out quickly enough to not actually need to do the braces thing again. It's one of those things where a quick surgery and swift recovery now can prevent years of more suffering as you have your teeth re-straightened after leaving it too long like my sister did.

I also tend to think like SeaChange - get through on trauma at a time... and make sure you are in the best possible shape for each IVF cycle.

Alison - have sent you an email! :-) Good to see you!!!

BW - I have decided to go ahead with the wisdom teeth, you are right about needing to do it, I guess I just wanted to get into our next cycle as soon as I could, but I really am happy to wait. Hopefully my body holds off on a period and it works out perfectly time wise, but if not, we will just wait until the next cycle

OK so after having my wisdom teeth out, let me recommend to everyone - don't even think of trying to do IVF on top of that! The pain, and stress of another operation would have made it absolutely impossible to do IVF, so I'm glad I listened to everyones advice (i dont always!) and am waiting until next month to start a cycle.

Good Move!! I had my wisdom teeth out a couple of weeks ago, so I wouldn't have to deal with it when I start an IVF cycle... It was a painful recovery, but one I'm glad I've gone through now!
