Hi everyone, I've just started knitting today after looking up how to do it on youtube. I have a pattern for a baby beannie which I don't really know how to read but I thought I'd start off knitting the 1st part which is casting on 49 stiches and than work in garter st until work measures 15 cm. I presume that this means to keep making new rows until I have 15 cm's worth of knitting... Than I was planing to ask a client at work how to read the rest of the pattern.

I've managed to cast on 49 stitches and than do three more rows but each time I do a new row I've noticed that I end up with another stich (or 2) ??? Oh I don't know there is now about 56ish stiches! What have I done wrong or is that supposed to happen? Am I meant to just flip over the 1st and last stich onto the right hand knitting needle?
