Two books I would recommend getting a hold of:

Best option as a stitch reference & how to book:
A ~ Z of crochet: a complete manual for the beginner through to the advanced stitcher. ISBN 978 09675476 3 0 - good pics but no projects ; gives both uk and us terms including abbreviations and symbols; and the different hook sizes and conversion table for these. I picked this one up at a news agent looking at the price tag. I recommend this one best

2nd option
Instant expert crochet edited by katy bevan ISBN 9781741780406. This one has good pics but not as extensive in stitches covered; does have conversion charts but these aren't as extensive as the other book. This book does have some patterns.

I'd see if your local public library has a copy of either of these in their collection or ask if they can get these as an inter library loan so you can see them before buying or trying to buy them. You can also see what's on the library shelves at 746.43 as that's where the crocheting books are.
