At the end of the day, it is PUBLIC transport. Also as the services become more crowded, personal space needs to become less of an issue. Thinking of it, these days shouldn't we just be thankful that we managed to get seat in the first place?

I don't think the fact that it is public transport excuses imposing quite so much in someone's space. There are still social rules on public transport.

Are there really rules for public transport? The only ones that are official, that I know of, are to do not holding the doors open and delaying the train, along with giving up the priority seat to someone who has that priority.

Honestly I think everyone has their own rules on how everyone should behave on PT and sadly in a lot of cases they just plain don't match. I think we need to be aware that not everyone is in our heads and therefore, cannot know what our "rules". ( and if they were in our heads to know our rules, then they would be breaking the personal space rule and therefore cannot win)
It is not about "us", all we can do is behave in a manner that we expect of others and try not to take offence if someone behaves in a different way. I doubt anyone deliberately goes out on PT just to annoy people by sitting/standing/whatever near them (well there might be the odd weirdo)

Disability or choice, your bum either fits on one seat or it doesnt.

The question is, if it doesnt, do you then have a right to infringe on the seats and anatomy of the people next to you? Or do you stand, or wait until 2 adjoining seats become avaliable?.

    Much to ponder.....
    Interesting point!
And personally I will stand rather than share a seat with someone, I feel claustrophobic on crowded public transport as it is! (I also plan to leave at least 2 buses/trains/trams early, so if its too full I can wait for an emptier one, rather than be crammed into a full one)

    Bigger seats would be great!
If seats were bigger it would mean there would be less of them or you'd have to pay more on planes. Not sure if that would be an acceptable solution for many.

the large woman from the OP is definitely at fault and just plain rude. probably gets by on life based on the fact that most people actively avoid any form of conflict with strangers (cant remember the link but a study found that less than 10% would challenge someone cutting in line)

I am 6'4' and at my biggest I was about 130kg, in a crowded public train the only seats I can sit in are the paired facing seats or the seats that face towards the centre of the train (back to the wall). When the train was busy if I wanted to sit in the pair of seats my knee would have been right between someone elses legs! (I think it is called Knee sex!) regardless. I was aware of the situation I was in and if there was no centre facing seats I would just put my hand up agains the roof and suck it up as I knew I couldnt just sit on someone as that is just rude.

Unrelated - I once had a very small asian man ( like literally half my size) fall asleep next to me on the train once and he unintentionally drooped his head onto my shoulder (all romantic like!) the people around me and I were all laughing and when he woke up he panicked and started to apologise profusely and I had to tell him a bunch of times that it was ok and I thought it was funny!
