My nan, bless her, has gone blind in the last few years, but she still serves a proper pot of tea, with china cups and a milk jug every time I go there. And the teapot never gets washed. My brother put it in the sink with the dishes a few years ago and boy, was there drama I love it- there is something ritualistic and comforting about serving tea like that.

I agree LR... I make a pot every morning - & I have a green jug with white spots that I put my milk in... I love a pot of tea... I always make a pot whenever I have visitors also - usually for myself I make a pot twice a day. It's the ritual that is comforting I think...

That's not old fashioned, it is good grammar.
I always put my home address on the right, and the addressee on the left.

ALthough if its a CV i put all my details under my name, and centered.

Senior staff are called by firstname in most workplaces.
Clients are different and you have to take it on a case by case basis and work to their expectations.
Id never call a chef anything other than chef.

Regarding my resume... apparently it needs to start with "Skills" not the old fashioned "Education" (this goes further down). You also must not put in hobbies and interests. Just two examples that spring to mind... that the agent mentioned today.

If i had not put in hobbies or interests on my CV i may not have gotten my job.
Seriously they asked me about them in the interview.

I wouldn't stress too much about the resume order - from what I understand, the most important thing is that it's concise and easy to read.

When I worked with young people, writing a resume then skills definitely would have come before education - because their 'skills' were worth looking at, their education level probably wasn't.

If you have a good education though, then that's not worth hiding down the bottom of the page in my opinion. A resume is your first impression with many employers, so you want them to see the best stuff first - so put whatever is your best stuff at the top.

I had no idea that people used to double space at the end of sentences! Is that from type-writer days?
I also had no idea that people used to sign their name on the bottom right.
I did know about writing letters with address up the top.

I love tea from a teapot and in a nice tea cup though, and I like wearing half aprons. But that's not old fashioned as in that's what I was brought up with and I'm set in my ways...that's old fashioned in that's something my Gran does that I like and decided to take on.

I love being modern with a touch of the old. I don't ever want to be someone who isn't up with what's happening now. To me this is no different than emotional or intellectual growth. You stop learning you stop growing simple as that.

However I have a taste for things that would be considered old fashioned. I love housework. I love baking. I love aprons. I love pots of tea and old mismatched china. I love art deco. I love dinner parties with napkins and centre pieces. I love water glasses and formal dining. I love linen. I love pin curls. I love afternoon tea with scones and egg & cucumber sandwiches with the crusts cut off. I love homemade. I hate convenience foods. I love thank you notes and Mr & Mrs. I love all my kids aunties and uncles and they have many. I love JAZZ. I love tradition. I love 1950's clothing.

I double-space after a full stop although in texts now sometimes (I am so naughty!) leave NO gap after the full stop if it means sending one message, not two.

My name and sign-off are indented to twice the indent of the first line of the paragraph.

I don't make DS call random adults "Uncle Phil" or "Auntie Kate" but instead "Mr Phil" or "Mrs Kate" (or "Miss Kate") - sounds perfectly polite without random "uncles" or "aunts", which I detested as a child.

As a teacher, I hate "Miss" with a passion. It is Mrs X or even Lady X (don't use that one much for some reason), not "Miss". Hate it.

Talking to people professionally: last names. Dr Jones or Mr Greeves. Talking to people as friends: Mike or Jane. Talking to underlings: either first names or last names, no honourific. On a phone call, the name they give: "thank you Alison" or "can you help, Mrs Long?"

Addressing me: either Mrs *DH* or Lady *me*. I am Mrs *my husband* and not enough people call me by his name! I hate to see letters to Mr X and Mrs Y ZZZZZ - no, just Mr and Mrs X ZZZZZ. Or Ambassador and Lady ZZZZZ.

I have teapots. A family teapot for everyday use. A tea-set teapot for afternoon teas with visitors. A dinner service tea-pot for when you have tea after a larger meal. Three minimum! Each used and valued. I also have a seperate tea service and dinner service. Just having one is fairly old-fashioned these days from what I can tell.

Wrong type of thong honey - we're talking about the footwear kind. But I suspect that after hanging around with Australians for as long as you have, you already know that and just wanted to make the superman joke.

I can't recall who said it but I too will never get the hang of predictive texting when using sms. I think it is the first thing technology-wise that I have decided that I won't learn. I understand about growing as a person emotionally and all and I hope I don't stagnate in that regard... but I think there will come a point in all our lives that we will sit back and be happy to let technology pass us by. You can only keep up for so long. Yes i know you hear of old folks in their 90's who have embraced computers and this gives the impression they are staying up with everything but i bet they don't I bet they still don't know how to program their VCR.

I don't know... I know that learning new things lessens the likelyhood of degenerative disease like dementia/alzheimers etc but I do have an acceptance that i just can't keep up with EVERYTHING as well as i have in the past. I don't have a foot in the grave, I just want to be at peace with this. I would rather learn 5 new languages before i die than keep up with some aspects of technology. I don't want to start feeling insecure and bitter about not staying on the cutting edge of techology. The thing is that life offers us so much that we have to choose. I really feel drawn to learn so many fundamental skills in life... such as learning how to bake a lovely loaf of bread from scratch (all the better to appreciate it) than to learn some of the more complex things. Does this make any sense?
