I'm getting my first tatt on Thursday night, a portrait of Jazz. I've finally gotten over the fear factor. Not of the pain though, fear of not having a good artist! LOL! So I found one I trust with this piece and I booked it... 6pm Thursday I'm getting it done!
Any tips? I have no idea how much this is going to hurt and he reckons it'll take 2-3 hours. I'll admit, the pain is starting to scare me
good luck! the only thing stopping me getting one is the pain factor so i dont have any tips but i have heard although not related to the pain but a lollipop and a drink of orange juice before hand is good as it boosts your sugar levels which helps in some way

I am not getting anything like a portrait, like you I fear the artist doing a bad job. That is the only thing that has put me off ever getting loads... fear of bad work.
Where are you getting your tattoo?
Apparently pain varies depending where you get it.
Honestly I think you're going to be fine, if I can do it anyone can.
I have to have numbing cream for a blood test because I will faint but I would get another tattoo anyday over a needle.
It's a different kind of pain, it's definately bearable.
I have a tattoo on my wrist which is supposedly quite painful but I was fine.
It does hurt, I'm not going to lie, but it's not a bad pain, it's fine, so relax, it's not bad enough to stress about.
I have a nose ring and that was so much worse than my tattoo!
If you're worried buy some Emla gel from the chemist and put it on the area an hr before you go, this is what I use for blood tests, although I didn't use it for my tatt and I managed fine, I was able to watch the guy do it, have a convo etc.

Expect the worst pain ever then when it's not it will be a pleasant surprise, my first an only tatt took 2 hrs and every one said it doesn't hurt so I didn't mentally prepare
Serenity, it was great I enjoyed most of it (bar a few moments). I expected the worst pain, and then when he started and asked if I was ok, I said "is that it?". He said woman have the best pain thresholds, although the chick next to me was bawling so I like to think I am a big tough woman now hehe
