I can't believe it.... I like many of us usually leave the writing and campaining up to others but i to have written a letter to all the pm's..I can't work out how to paste it on here but i basically outlined our experiences and then wrote similar to all of you.

Thanks for bringing this to out attention...We definately wouldn't afford it if the safety net was abolished completly in regard to IVF...

Have forwarded some emails to friends and family so hopefully they to will join in our fight!

Sydney IVF also has something about this on their site: Sydney IVF | Stop IVF Funding Cuts | Protect your Medicare Safety Net rights

I will also be sending an e mail to members of parliament. I think if this were to happen it would be a crying shame.
Thank you for bringing this to my attention.

Please also tell you bellybelly friends - not many people are aware of this and the changes are significant - possibly affecting everyone undergoing IVF regardless of income.

Good on everyone who already sent their emails. I've just sent my letters/emails to my local MP, Kevin Rudd, Nicola Roxon and all others listed on the letter i got from access. I am so angry about this!! Please everyone write and send your letters - it took me 15 minutes only. I am so sick of infertility being treated like it's a choice we made!!

I just received an email from MIVF themselves about it. I do not know how to post it here, but if I could have an email address I could forward it and you could see it..

Could the mods send a private message/email to each BB member suggesting they write in with their concerns, as we have lots of members, who going through IVF or not, would, I am sure, be happy to email a letter ???

Would a generic letter that we could cut and paste our own details in suffice ?

I got an email from IVF Australia about this today - just checking in to see if it had been raised in the fourm.

Would a generic letter that we could cut and paste our own details in suffice ?
I think that's a great idea, I want to write one but haven't found the time to sit down and do it.

CANCER patients and couples struggling to have a family could lose taxpayer-funded subsidies under a plan to means-test the Medicare Safety Net.

The controversial overhaul of health funding is being considered by the Federal Government's razor gang in a desperate bid to slash spending in a looming horror May Budget.

Amid growing speculation about the cuts, Queensland doctors and cancer, heart and IVF patients throughout Australia have launched a campaign urging Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and his Cabinet not to proceed.

What do you think about the planned cuts?
Have your say Taxpayers spend $319 million each year on the Medicare Safety Net, which is meant to help people with large medical bills.

Under the scheme, taxpayers can claim 80 per cent of their out-of-pocket medical expenses once they have spent $1111 in a year for a range of doctor visits and tests, including specialist consultations, ultrasounds, pap smears, blood tests, CT scans and X-rays.

But figures show more than half the money handed out goes straight to obstetricians and gynaecologists, with the scheme growing seven times faster than the inflation rate in 2007.

Health Minister Nicola Roxon yesterday refused to confirm or deny that the Government would means-test the Medicare Safety Net or remove the eligibility of some services under it.

But the lobbying is believed to be frustrating Mr Rudd's chief-of-staff Alister Jordan, whose staff have asked the IVF lobby group Access Australia to stop emailing him about their concerns.

Access Australia spokeswoman Sandra Dill -- who argues cutting the safety net would allow only the rich to receive IVF services -- said someone from Mr Jordan's staff yesterday rang to advise of the overflowing email correspondence and suggested that her members should write letters instead.

Yay - it sounds like letters are working - let them flood their emails (although I think hard copies are great as well - just slightly less convenient...although I may put mine into a hard copy and send tomorrow). They should know how much people care about this. I actually think it's not a solution to their budget issues at all. Did they consider that most people who want a baby will sacrifice all discretionary spending to save for IVF - I don't know how many people this is, but think about it - everyone I know would give up plasmas, new cars, going out to eat, etc. if they had to do so to save for an IVF cycle - there would be no question about it. How could this possibly help the economy. This is just not being thought through. Infertility is not a choice! if it was, no one would be in these threads.

I too PMed bellybelly earlier this week about sending a blast email - I believe they were considering it.

I will try to come up with a form tonight from home.

WLAB - I don't know why i didn't receive an email from MIVF - maybe they sent it to my home account, I'll check - if not, I'll PM you with my email address.

Interesting article Muppity, seems to be one newspaper picking up the issue, thanks for sharing.
Sorry ladies I have been flat out at work and home (yes I have a life outside of BB LOL) but hope to get to post a bit more later tonight on the issue. Keep up the letter/email writing and share your stories if you can

Possums - that would be great.

One of my fears is that people who don't know about being in this situation do think that the government spends too much money on it. I don't think people truly understand unless they or someone near and dear to them have to go down this path. I hope there's not backlash - like too many recipients are too old to get funding or the odds of too many recipients conceiving are too low or the recipient has tried too many times. If people go down this path, possible outcomes are so scary as each of our situations is unique but we all share the common desire for a baby and wish beyond all wishes that we didn't have to resort to IVF to have one.

I just received an email from BellyBelly re: a petition for midwives/childbirth choices - why didn't this email tell members about the Safety Net issue? I don't understand that.
