Spoke to the accounts ladie we have to pay full cycle fees as PGD was performed less $845 dollars for day surgery fee and ET so we still have to pay around $11,000 after the $3,000 we have payed so far on all the extras and meds and what we get back from medicare we wont be able to afford another cycle so that is it for us.
Very sorry to hear that, Ferrals. I'm a patient at QFG, Brisbane and I haven't had to do PGD before or assisted hatching, but an IVF/ICSI cycle is only $6,700. I wonder why there is so much of a difference in pricing. $11,000 is a lot of money.
Brunette-my full cyle cost's are $14,118 but i paid workup fees up front so i still have to pay the $12,600 but they are taking off the $845 like i said for the things i diddnt use but with all the doctors and geneticist appt ect and all the orgalutran($90 a pop) i have spent eprox $3,000 it all added up when i looked at my bank account so we just cant afford another go.

hunny i find that post you just did to be so sad and i was wondering as your only on the central coast have you ever thought of changing clinics /we go through westmead fertility they are soooo much cheaper as there non for profit but im really not sure how much PGD testing is as we do normal ivf-icsi and a full cycle only costs us $1450 for the LOT. yes you would have to change drs and hossys but worth a try yeh ? we see dr soo but theres heaps of drs to choose from .oh hun take care and good luk xoxox

Smithy-i looked into westmead ivf they dont do pgd for genetic conditions the whole thing sux we have a condition that requires help to have healthy children and the government wont help but god forbid they put viagra on the pbs list for old men to get a woody.
Wow, I am just blown away at the absolute variance in price. What a fantastic service that Westmead offers! We have private health, so that combined with the Medicare Safety Net means it's still expensive but nowhere near as much as what you've had to come up with, Ferrals. Bloody bureaucrats and their changes to IVF next year - and from a Labor government, too, which is supposed to have a party platform for health for equality and access for all!

I have they same fee's and costs as ferrals. Same Dr, same clinic. Same PGD. And this was our 2nd go. All the costs add up like crazy, not to mention all the travel from central QLD and hotels etc.
I have a friend who used QFG for $6000, even if you add on $4000 for PGD its still cheaper!!
As for the government, can they not see when we have children with diseases that can cost them millions in the long run, like my cousin and brother. On hospitals, care and operations. As well as carers pensions etc etc. When the technology is available to have embreos tested for these diseases, ALL carriers should be encouraged to use this servise, and the Gov should recognise we need the safety net to do this! If anything we should get more support from them, not a kick in the guts!!!

Ferrals- have you seen the genetasist at Sydney genetics? He is awesome, i can PM you his email, or the nurses can make an appt. (re- fetal testing)
Jaki-well said and yes i have seen the geneticist he was good but i am under the care of the head of fetal medicine at RNS he was the one who diagnoised abbi and told me she was not viable for life so he wants me to go back to him as soon as im pregnant.
Oh! and i emailed the gov polies regarding what happened to abbi and the enormous cost involved to care for her for her entire life had we had her and she survived but they dont seem to care.

I would hope that the IVF clinics are also complaining to the Gov on our behalf, and for themselves... They will surely lose buisness.
I know ours is they told me to keep an eye on their site for updates on the PGD pricing as they are talking with the powers above about to trying an exclude PGD patients from the new medicare changes anyway how are you feeling i hope no signs of AF and maybe some morning sickness
No AF yet but i was just really naughty and POAS. It was negative. Not sure if thats final or not. I feel sad now.
Oops sorry, when i looked at it under the light there was a faint positive line. Will do another test tomorrow morning, then BT friday.

Hi ladies just wanted to let you know i wont be posting in this thread anymore i am in the TTC thread after m/c or loss but i will say i feel good with my decision my boys have there mum back and i am positive for the future with my incredable man who i adore as i have said to others if i had no children i would have tried again but 8 months is a long time to put your life on hold when you have beautiful boys right under your nose anyway i am looking forward to my AF to start ttc again and DH are happy with our choice and giving im 35 we still have a little time to get pregnant you ladies have been fantastic and i am happy for you all keep your fingers crossed that my next bub is a healthy one.

it was 'third time is the charm' for us.. we just skated in before the finish line as we lost all our embies from the last cycle and had run out of money.... AND I started bleeding so assumed it was AF. To say I was crushed would be an understatement - I went into a bit of a state where I couln't look or talk to anyone for three days (it had been a long painful year)... So you can imagine my shock and disbelief when the nurse called to say positive.
I have been doing acupuncture throughout and quickly went to see her to stop the bleeding - it stopped within a half hour of the appointment and it was a long wait over the next week but following BT shows HCG is increasing so breathing (a tiny bit) more

Just wondering do any of you PGDians or anyone you know do PGD with Monash?
I read on the net today they biopsy embreos on day 3. Im wondering how they can do this without them being hatched.
SIVF is so different. Surely if they could biopsy on day 3 to give us more to choose from they would??

not sure about monash but we were with Melbourne IVF and all our PGD was done on day three...if testing for a specific genetic condition i personally would think it is a viable option....JMHO.

Hey Jaki I am with Monash and yes they biopsy on day 3 and transfer day 5. To be honest I don't know why but next time I speak to someone will ask for you
Also - I had a chemical pregnancy with my first transfer. At the time I was starting to think that this may mean I had disguised fertility issues. My acupuncturist (who basically just does IVF patients) told me that this was actually a really good sign as it shows that I am able to make pregnancy happen. She reccomended to me that I go straight into another cycle as in her experience it usually happens the next transfer.

I was at Melbourne - and they tested on Day 3 and transferred late on day 3.
Different clinics do it differently - but they are probably right to have just one procedure at each clinic, since it is really, really fiddly, and so much depends on the skills of the embryologist - so you want them to be very, very practised at whatever method is used.
The day 3 biopsies require drilling a hole into the embryo with a laser and sucking out one or two cells. They have 2 big disadvantages - it is more difficult to get a test that works on that tiny amount of genetic material (onja's 2 years to formulate a test, and my 3 years to formulate a test are pretty typical), and secondly not all embryo's survive the test.
The advantage is that some embryos that may not make it to day 5 in a culture dish could make it inside a body.
If I remember correctly you could manage to have healthy bubs just by sex selection though some of them would be carriers - if that is the case then you wouldn't have the test development marathon if you were to swap to a day 3 clinic. As far as I know there is a big waiting list for PGD at both Melbourne and Monash -but it wouldn't hurt to call them and ask. Melbourne has a specific PGD coordinator, who would be worth talking to.

Not sure if any of you are still lurking.... Hubby and i have decided to jump on the PGD rollercoaster again rather than doing a single embie FET. We plan to enjoy christmas and new year, then save like mad. We are aiming for April. YAY!!!

My DH and I have just been approved to go through IVF with PGD for medical reasons (to reduce the chances of a genetic condition) and I had a couple of questions that I thought you girls that have been through the process might be able to answer for me.
We went to the initial compulsory counselling session for IVF, but we went to a group session where they talked about IVF cycles in general. It was more focused on couples that were going through IVF for infertility reasons, rather than for PGD. I'm wondering what the cycle might entail for me? Would I have to take the pill first or is that not done with PGD patients?
Also, did you have to wait long to start a cycle in order to coordinate with the PGD lab? I've heard that they can get busy and that sometimes people might be put on the pill for a while until the lab is ready?
I'm sure my FS will probably answer all these questions for me at our next apt, but I'm just excited (and nervous) and I like to try to be informed :)

You will have a general IVF cycle - there are several varieties available, and for some of them you will be on the pill first.
There are 2 steps for genetic condition PGD - they first have to develop a test, (which takes some time, and which may also have a waiting list), and then they do the actual cycle with the PGD. There will be waiting involved - but I can't tell you how long. I do know that over the last few years the waiting has been reduced as they get better at test development and have more staff in the labs though. I had several years of test development and waiting before getting to do a cycle - but it's not usually so tricky now.

Thanks for the info KMN :) Fingers crossed the waiting won't be too long. I'm so eager to get going, lol. Hopefully our situation isn't too complex because it's just going to involve the lab using FISH to dye and count the numbers of some of the chromosomes.
I'm amazed that you had to wait years for test development. Gosh that must have been so hard for you. I hope your journey had a happy ending :hug:
I had a happy ending. There are some others who had a similar amount of waiting and then didn't though.
The chromosome counting version of PGD shouldn't have a huge wait - which clinic are you at?

My test was pretty simple and chromosome related also, it took 12 weeks with SIVF. So for that i was lucky.
Ive had 2 cycles, one on the pill and one off. Your first cycle in some cases ends up being a trial as it doesn't work the same for all people. Thats what happened to me and my 2nd cycle was much better.
Make sure when the time comes to start you come back to this thread, we may not be doing PGD often but we are always lurking and will give you the support you need!!!

Thanks Jaki. Sounds like my testing might be similar to what yours what. I'm so impatient when it comes to getting things I want that even 12 weeks sounds like such a long time, lol! Definitely worlds better than 1 year though, let alone 3...
I'm going through Monash IVF and most of my appointments will be in Sunshine with Dr Weston, but some of them (like the pgd appointment we had last week) are out in Clayton. I think Dr Weston also mentioned that at least one of the procedures might have to be done out there because that's where the pgd lab is. Although, I'm sure he also mentioned having procedures done at Western Day Surgery which is next door to his office. I'll ask again on Wednesday.

I have wonderful news! I had my appointment with my FS today and as soon as AF comes (which is any day now) we are going to start the IVF cycle! For the first time ever it seems that having private health insurance is paying off, because when I asked about whether we would have to wait long for the lab, he said that because I'm going private (and because our test is relatively simple) that there is no wait at all for us! I was speechless (but with a big grin on my face)!
I'm seeing his nurse on Friday to organise all the meds (unless AF shows up tonight or tomorrow morning, in which case I'll be going in tomorrow to see her). Pretty much everything will be done in Clayton due to the lab being there, but I don't mind having to drive out there for such a worthy cause ;)

just popping my head in to say hello.. I will find out what I am having on Thursday. Had a couple of big alarms over the first few months with bleeding but had no bleeding for a couple of months now so will be relieved to find out all is ok on Thursday :)
Hope your travels are going ok.. I understand the downs and ups of this rollercoaster ride. Hang in their chickens.. I am hoping to be proof that it does work out :)
