I think the only difference is that a BBT thermometer is more sensitive and is designed to pick up subtle changes in your temp. If the thermometer is digital, it might still be okay to use - how many decimal places does it give the temp to? My O thermo gives two decimal places. If yours does the same, I think it would be fine to use as a BBT thermo.
