    Clomid for LPD and Miscarriage

    Hi guys,

I am not sure what section to put this in, so have put in both the AC thread and a miscarriage thread. Mods, please move/delete if in the wrong place.

I am not sure if anyone here can help me, but I would love to hear from anyone who has been given clomid to help a possible luteal phase defect and/or to prevent a miscarriage.

My history is falling pg easily, but then losing my pregnancies, quite early on. The first was a missed m/c that was discovered at 8.5wks, but the baby had stopped growing at 7 wks. The second was very early at 5.3wks, but I knew my HCG level was dropping from when I was 4.6wks.

My specialist has done almost all the repeat loss tests, and everything has come back normal. All that hasn't been done is an endometrial biopsy for possible elevated levels of natural killer cells, but he seems certain this is not the problem, and in any event, is a v controversial area.

The only abnormal thing is that my cycles, ever since coming off the pill 18 mths ago, have been erratic. I went from having perfect 28 day cycles before the pill, to waiting 4 months just to get my cycle back after the pill, and ever since then my cycles have been long (from 32 to 52 days), but have lately stabilised to about 32 to 37 days. I also O late in my cycle, anywhere from CD20 to 26, and I have identified an LP of only 11 days on at least 2 cycles. I do not have PCOS, and no reason can be found for these cycles. I have just had cycle monitoring.

My specialist has now decided that I have a slight O dysfunction, so has prescribed clomid. My understanding is that this should hopefully bring O forward and help by boosting all my hormones so that a better egg is released, and should also hopefully help with my short LP, and therefore result in that ever elusive baby!

I would love to hear anyone's experiences on clomid, and reasons for it to be prescribed. I started my first tablet last night (50mg) and feel fine so far, but I am a little worried about the potential side-effects!

Does this sound like a good solution to the problem? How did you find taking clomid? Has anyone had a cycle cancelled due to too many follies and what is the chance of this? Did you have success with clomid?

Sorry for so many questions - I am just keen to find out as much as I can and my specialist, although good, always seems too rushed for questions.

    TIA,

    Bun xx

Bun - I am sorry to hear of your losses, but pleased to heard that you have assistance.
I have been taking Clomid for a boost too. I was having long cycles afer coming off BCP and Oing at about CD22-23 with a 10day LP.
I am pleased to let you know that last month (my first on 50mg of Clomid) i did not suffer any side effects, and I Od on CD14 and had a 13 day LP. But unfortunately no pg... So for me that is a success.
Good luck with it Bun and I hope you have a very sticky pregnancy soon!!!

    Hi Bun,
I have PCOS and that is why I am trying Clomid. But I have heard of a lot of women who do O and take it for LP defects.
I didn't have many side effects on 50mg and 100mg...some hot flushes. But when I just took 150mg I was extremely nauseas and had funny vision and just felt blah.
I have never heard of anyone having a cycle cancelled because of too many follicles....are you getting a scan to check the follicle growth. I had scans on about Day 14 and then Day 21 to check follicles but unfortunately I had none growing.
Even though I havent had success using Clomid I have heard of a lot of women who do have success using it. And the great thing is that you ovulate already! Hopefully this will be the boost you need to get that bubba to stick!
    Good Luck with everything.

    Hi Bun,

Just thought I would add my 2 cents worth in!!!
I have never had clomid, but after my first IVf cycle, my FS thought I may have had a LPD, because my lining wasn't thickening enough for the embryos to implant.
I looked into it and started having acupuncture done.
The lady that does this for me specialises in all sorts of fertility assistance - both to work with AC and also without it.
She started me on weekly acupuncture & a mix of chinese herbs - after doing this for a few months, we did another IVF cycle, and my lining was twice as thick as it had been, and since being on the herbs & acupuncture, my cycles are perfect 28 days every month, and ovulation is always at the 14day mark.

Its just a suggestion, by I would highly recommend looking into it just to get your cycle back in order - and so you know when you're ovulating... They say that the acupuncture & herbs also improves fertility, etc greatly, so its worth having a try!

    Good Luck,
    Holly

    Hi Bun

I am now on my 5th round of Clomid.
After coming off the pill my cycles were very erratic and almost non existant. I even had 1 cycle last for 100 days. Tests showed that i was not ovualting so the doctor put me on 50mg of Clomid. This didnt make me ovulate so i then went on 100mg, again it didnt work and then we tried 150mg, no ovualtion again.
I then had a laparascopy/hysterascopy which showed i have mild endometriosis. After this procedure we actually fell pregnant without Clomid, my FS said he has seen that a lot, he believes i may have had a blockage somewhere and the flushing of dye through my tubes during the procedure cleared this up. Unfortunately the pregnancy didnt last.
My cycles were still erratic after the miscarriage so he put me on Clomid again, this time 100mg. It actually worked this time, i ovulated which was great news, unfortunately we didnt fall pregnant that month. So i took another round of 100mg of Clomid this month and am still in my 2 week wait to see how we went this cylce. Fingers crossed.
During the first 3 rounds of Clomid i felt quite a few side effects, headahces, a bit moody, emotional and feeling a bit sick in the tummy. Nothing i couldnt handle though.
This last 2 rounds however i havent really had any side effects which has been great. I have been making sure i take the tablets when with food, i am not sure if this is why it is different than the first 3 rounds though.
I have ovulated in the last 2 rounds so perhaps the reason Clomid didnt work for me to begin with was due to the blockage i may have had.
My overall experience with Clomid is not too bad, i take it from days 5-9. I am glad when the 5 days i take it are over as i dont quite feel myself but i am happy to do it as many times as it takes to get the end result we are after.
With the erratic cycles i had been having i am just pleased that finally i am ovualting and my body seems to be working the way it should, although we havent had the positive pregnancy result again yet i am feeling much better with regular cycles.

Good luck with your round of Clomid, i found these forums very helpful when reading about other peoples experiences.
Here's hoping positive news is just around the corner for you, good luck.

Thank you all so much for your responses. It's great to hear from other people going through similar experiences, and to hear your stories.

jamnik - I find it so strange that the erratic cycles only began after the pill - now I wish I had never taken it! My first cycle off the pill was 132 days! I am so glad to hear the clomid is working and has you O'ing again - I am sure you will be pg in no time. Good luck! That's good that the side effects have not been too bad this time. I usually don't even notice side-effects, I just tend to ignore things, but was worried about this drug due to some things I had heard. So far so good, hopefully it will stay that way.

Hollybolly - the acupuncture sounds great! I have thought about trying it out but haven't gotten around to it yet. Everytime I look into it, they seem to concentrate on getting pg, whereas my problem is staying pg, not getting pg. Maybe they just don't advertise that side of things as it is not as common, though? I'm not sure, I may phone a couple of places and see what they have to say.

sammy - thanks for the info re follies - good to hear that it doesn't sound likely to have a cycle cancelled. Yes, I will be having monitoring. The clinic mentioned having to wait til my scan to check that there aren't too many follies before we try, but hopefully that is pretty unlikely and maybe this cycle will be it! Good luck for you too!

rufalina - another one with strange cycles after the pill. Isn't that annoying? That's great that you O'ed on CD14 (I would be stoked with that!), you will def be pg in no time at all! Good luck!

Again, thank you all so much, you have really helped!

    Hi all,

I took Clomid prescribed by an OB/GYN for 4 cycles but only took it for 2 cycles. I had terrible head and ear aches plus visual disturbances. It did help me O but both cycles were BFN. I finally went to my first appointment with FS at Monash IVF on Monday (after 3 mos waiting for my first appointment) and my FS said that she wouldn't recommend Clomid for over 35's (I'm 40) so it was good then that I decided to stop taking it this month.

I will be having a laparoscopy, hysteroscopy and other blood tests in June for her to determine what's wrong with me. She did say my age is a factor.

I'm also seeing an ACU and TCM for fertility herbs for 5 weeks already. ACU is really relaxing and the herbal tea was yucky at first but I'm used to it now.

    Good luck to everyone.
