Default Fertility Drugs & Side Effects

Whilst TTC with PCOS fertility drugs are something I tend to think about. But I always worry about the side effects. If you have ever taken a Fertility Drug did you suffer from any side effects, and if so what kind? And if you did suffer any effects did you cease taking the drug because of this?

I think this kind of information can be hard to come by and I think it would definitley benefit those with fertility problems. So please share your story, for me and for others!

    Good question Cailin!!

Ok, I have only been on Clomid so far (hope not to be on any other actually) I have taken 50mg's twice, 100mgs twice and 150mg's once.

I did get side effects, worst would have been hot flushes, and severe mood swings (like REALLY bad) I also had CM problems (drying up). I also suffered from bad headaches (almost like my brain was being squeezed in my head).

That is all I can think of at the moment LOL, don't think there was any other side effects but if I remember I will edit this post and put it in.

    Hi Cailin & Mandi,

I have been on every fertility drug known to man I think, and have suffered side effects from most...

ATM Im on Metformin, Dexamethasone and I have previously been on IVF drugs, Clomid etc.

The worst one that I have come across was the Metformin, when I started taking it, for about a month, I was as sick as a dog, really bad nausea. But it passed. I just had to persist with it and finally felt ok.

The other thing that I had problems with was the injections for IVF. I ended up getting Ovarian Hyperstimulation and was close to being put in hospital. I would never want to go through that again.

If I can help with any other information, please let me know....

OMG Clomid & Met don't mix with me, I get reaaaaaaaally bad nausea! I really hope it doesn't happen again this month, but my gf is on the same dosage as me and she suffered it again this past cycle so I am really worried I haven't had any reaaal bad effects with the met, apart from the runs when you first start, but the clomid was hell. Let hope its better this time!

Thanks for the info Bel! Sorry to hear about the Ovarian Hyperstimulation, glad things are better now.

tee he he! I had the runs with it too, its horrible stuff. Are you on it permanently until you conceive? My specialist has asked me to stay on it until I conceive and then he will ween me off it slowly. Apparently you can get horrific side effects if you just stop taking it.

In my experience, even with taking vitamins, it takes about 3 months for a drug to be effective in your body, if taken in small doses...

Good luck with it this month Cailin!!

I have to stay on it permanently as my dr is worried about me getting type 2 diabetes. I guess if the weight comes off [-o< I will be weaned but for now its a permanent thing!

Thanks for the goodluck you too!

its funny that you say the weight should come off, but you said you were only a size 12 previously (I read it in a thread somewhere) that's not big at all!!!

Im the non standard PCOS, Im only a size 10 so the weight issue isn't relevant to me I guess.

So do you still get sick from the Metformin even though you've been on it for a while? It seriously took me close to a month to get used to it...

I was on Clomid (50) for 12 months and had heaps of side effects - sever abdominal pain, nausea, headaches, mood swings, hot flushes, dizziness and all the ones others have mentioned.

One thing to note though is that during the treatment I had to get my prescription from a different pharmacy than usual and ended up having a different brand - and although they (pharmacist and dr) assure me they are all identical one brand did not give me anywhere near the amount of side effects as the other!

So if your on one brand might be worth giving the other brand a try - cant hurt and might reduce the side effects (Can hope anyway).

Haven't start the IVF injections yet, but not looking forward to those side effects - anyone know what they are like and what I can expect?

I don;t think I have had any side effects - I will take more notice of CM next time though and report back. But as far as mood swings, perhpas you should ask DH!!

However, it is difficult to know whether modd swings are part of the drug side effects, or the fact that you are just so bloody stressed and everything seems to be difficult!! So mood swings may not be part of the drugs :smt102

I also didn't really have any side effects with any of the drugs I was on. That I noticed anyway! At the counselling session we were told that I was going to feel like I had PMT x 100! But I honestly didn't feel like that. I was prob more stressy and a bit neurotic than what I normally am.

I am in my first cycle of clomid (50mg) and haven't really noticed too many side effects. I have had less cm than usual and noticed more twinges around the ovary with the main follicle, but that's about it.

Bel you are lovely, but I have to clarify, I was size 12 before I got diagnosed...now I would say I am 3 sizes bigger

I put on 30 kgs in a year and thats when the warning bells went of for my Dr's. I want to get back down to 60 kgs then I would be happy!

The big change that I have noticed - and it's not related to drugs - is that since my first m/c, AF is very painful ont he first day. Like a buringin feeling in my lower abdomen. Before I started ont he TTC route, I wouldn't know about AF until I went to the toilet and there she was.

On IVF meds, ie Lucrin and Puregon, the first time I went on the injections, I got so depressed that any one thing could make me dissolve into tears. I was a wreck, and work would send me home early a lot so I didn't scare the customers. I was also in quite a lot of discomfort from day dot. I thought my tummy was going to explode. :smt103 AND they only got 6 eggs.

This time, I'm giddy as a school girl. No depression! In fact, just the opposite! I'm giggly and smiling all the time. I've even got myself baffled. I'm only starting to get uncomfortable now (DAY12) and I've got 12 well developed follicles and more little ones. And I'm on the same dosage as last time.

So go figure. I was sooo mentally preparing myself for this cycle, thinking that DH was sure to divorce me this time...

I am on my second cycle of clomid. Last cycle I took 50mg, this time I took 100mg. I didn't really think about side effects much, but I have been a grumble bum the past few days (as you can read from my post yesterday!!). I have also experienced a couple of hot flushes (I think??!!) yesterday and this morning. I have been desperately analysing CM (yuck! TMI i know!!) for anything egg white as I have read a lot of girls talking about in here, but have noticed nothing that could be described as such. So i don't know. Maybe they are side effects, or maybe I'm just coming to terms with the whole long term TTC thing and it's getting to me. Why isn't it just easy???!! People who don't want to get pg do so all the time! It seems. Plus does it seem to anyone else that there are MILLIONS of babies around at the moment????? Every second advert on tv has got babies, they are in the shopping centres, walking past my house... everywhere!! OK I'm being over-sensitive, but once I start writing this I can see the funny side

    Hey LG,

everything you're feeling, I think we've all felt as one time or other. It is hard. It's bloody hard. Yet, so many people who don't even want kids find it so damn easy....

hi, gals! finally decided to join in after reading all your experiences. i've been active in ttc after m/c and i think i've met some of you there.

i'm also in my 3rd cycle of clomid (100mg) and i'm on cd 7 today. my last month's clomid effects were definitely worse than this month despite my taking double dosage. i had hot flushes, severe mood swings and be physically tired all the time. i noticed my sleep is affected and feel tired despite 6-8 hrs of it.

i was diagnosed with pcos after almost a year of ttc without success. when finally we tried clomid the first time, we got pregnant (twins!) but m/c at 9.5 weeks. that was 6 months ago and we're still ttc. i'm also praying for my miracle baby to come soon cuz i'm already feeling desperate.

to all of you brave girls, good luck on your ttc!
