H.S.G Xray?? IVF. Very Nervous Plz Help!! TTC for 3 Years.

Hey My Partner & I have been TTC for over 3 years now, and about a year ago our GP doctor sent us to Westmead Fertility Centre. We went together to see what we could do, by my partners semen resultls he came back as fine, but a now they have sent me to do some test such as a interenal ultrasound, which i recently went to. But now i have the H.S.G Xray which im terrified going to. I dont know anyone who has been thorugh ivf and would love some help!! This is all we want is bub... and its just upsetting when you see all these outher people who didnt actually want the.. Plz help. Has anyone had a H.S.G???

Yep, I've had one - it's a very common test to check whether your tubes are clear. It's very quick. You lay down on the table, the insert a catheter and squirt some ink inside, then take an xray to see if the ink comes through the tubes.
Unfortunately, there are a lot of invasive tests necessary to try and figure out what the problem may be, and what treatment will be most appropriate.

I was a bit intimidated about the hsg too - don't worry it's really not as bad as it sounds! Someone else probably knows more than me but here's my experience. For most people it's totally painless, in and out in about 10 minutes flat, similar to a pap smear. They can check the lining inside looks okay, if they can see your eggs developing normally, and also for me they put some dye in to check the tubes were all clear (they were). You get to see it all on a screen while they do it which is kind of weird but cool.

If they find anything or they don't, don't worry - it's just one step towards being able to help give you the best chance.

For me they ended up needing to jiggle around quite a bit to do the tube dye part, which gave me cramps like period pain and made me feel dizzy. But they were really nice and helped me feel relaxed, and your modesty is protected (you wear a gown). I felt fine again about 15 minutes afterward (I was told to take naprogesic with me and was glad I did).

Thanks for your support, even though iv never had a pap smear the closet thing i have had to a pap smear would of beeni in internal ultrasound, and that was very uncomfortable i burst out in tears not that it hurt just how im only 20 and i have to go through this, i didnt think trying for a family would be this hard..

I've had one too. It's very common to have this procedure and works just as Marcellus said above. Some women find it just as easy as a pap smear and others a little more uncomfortable. The procedure doesn't take long. The dye can make you feel like you've got period pain, but not all people feel this. They say to take some naprogesic or the like before you have the test to help out. If your nervous take your partner and plan to have the rest of the day off work - to give yourself time to relax afterwards.

The main aim of the test is to see if your tubes are open, which is important if they want to prescribe some fertility medication. For some women they just need a hand by using medication and they don't proceed to IVF. The test isn't great for picking up endo or some other uterus conditions. You need a lap to really get a good look. If you or the FS suspects endo or some other uterus condition you could ask for a lap, and they can test your tubes whilst under the general anaesthetic. The down side to the lap is the recovery time, the recovery time from the HSG is minimal - you just get off the table and leave.

Hey.. Thanks for you reply, Ive recently had a lap which is a interenal ultrasound right?? That was pretty much uncomtforable...
Wold u need to take any spare pads just incase i leak afterwards..
Also i will be traveling by public transport will that be fine after i come out ?? Thanks for all the help

Thanks for all the info, is there any leaking afterwards, as i will be travelling by public transport and would like to know if i should take some pads. lol.. Thanks People for all you advice very helpful

Hi David & Missy,

Yes I had a bit of leakage. It's getting a bit hard to recall now, but I think I had a bit of the dye leak and some very light bleeding for a few days. Take a pad just in case, but they supplied one at the clinic I went to.

Oh, and that correct what M22 said, you seem to be more fertile in the following 3 months post-HSG

Thats Great to hear that you had success with the h.s.g, my fertility treatment did say that people have conceived after the h.s.g, which is making me want to book the appointment soon,.. Very happy to hear that you conceived after the hard time ppl go through with ivf...

yeah- I have 2 kids and didnt need another one It;s the last thing i wanted tough after being prodded and posted. But I truly truly believe that when you yearn for a child for so long, to have a successful pregnancy and then finally at the end of long road to hold that child in your arms- It's truly make it sweeter than those who "fall" naturally or without any intervention. Those tear we cried and the ache, the pain of infertilty never goes, but can only be shared with other who are going thru the same thing

I just wanted to also share my experience. I had alot of pain when they were trying to get the catheter in - equal to labour pains at one stage. I have had previous surgery on my cervix and pelvic infection which may be why. The dye part was painless (it feels like a baby kicking weird). I bled quite heavily afterwards, and lightly for a couple of days. I had alot of pain for several days. I definately couldn't work for a couple of days afterwards. For me I was in there for an hour.

I know most people are fine, in/out in 15 minutes, but just wanted to tell you of my experience, it may be better not to work that day. And I would definately have someone come with you for the trip home.

I am not trying to scare you, just to let you know that everyone has a different experience so be prepared to go home and rest and hopefully you won't have to. All the best, let us know how it goes.
