I have been TTC for 26 months now. I have been taking clomid and I am now seeing a naturopath. Is it normal for my cycle to be 34 days? A friend of mine was saying that its not right and I should have sex around days 12 -14 but according to my fertility doc I dont ovulate until day 21 - 24. In the 3 months I have been seeing my naturopath I have had one miscarrige and I know have very strong ovulation pain now. Does ovulation pain occur when your ovulating or after ovulation?
Hi Bree,
I think there may be a very wide range of 'normal' so while some women may have the typical 28-day cycle, many don't and it's not necessarily a problem. Maybe this is just the way your ovaries work.
I'm pretty sure ovulation pain occurs at ovulation.
Having sex at day 12-14 makes sense if you ovulate on day 14.... but not if you ovulate around day 21 (well, you can still have sex then if you want, but you know what I mean )
How long have you been on Clomid for? Were your cycles irregular before commencing Clomid? What CD day are you starting Clomid on?
FWIW I am currently in my forth cycle of Clomid & have had 3 cycle at 29 days and one at 31 days. Prior to this my cycles were all over the place.
In relation to ovulation, marcellus is correct. Not everyone ovulates on CD 14. I know since being on Clomid that I ovulate somewhere between CD 12ish but prior to CD 21 (I have had two progesterone tests confirming that I am ovulating, which is done on CD 21) My GYNO/OBS has told DH & I to BD every second day from CD 10 to CD 21 and prior and after this when we want. In relation to ovulation pain, I would second what marcellus says that it should be at the time of ovulation. If you BD on or after the pain, most possibly you would have missed the chance for egg to meet sperm. HTH
Thankyou marcellus & RhiChiChi for replying so soon.
RhiChiChi, I had a very irregular cycle before commencing on the clomid. My cycles could vary from 29 days to 63 days. I have only started noticing the ovulation pain since seeing my Naturopath. On my second cycle since seeing the Naturopath I did conceive but I also miscarriaged. I am now moving into my 4th cycle with the Naturopath and my 9th month on clomid. I have been taking the clomid from CD 5 - 9. My FS done blood tests showing I O around CD 21 - 24.
Hi Bree. What is 'normal' for me has always been a 34-36 day cycle. At the peak of my endo problems though I have been up to 46 days but only a few cycles were ever like that. I think your friend needs to have a bit of re-education about this and realise that many, many women have cycles longer than the 'norm' of 28 days
Even if you have a longer cycle, you will still have a lutal phase of 14 days, so on a 34 day cycle this would be around CD20 in theory, but seeing as how you are being tested for this, you know when it is. When we were TTC our 3rd and 4th babies (#1 was a wonderful surprise and #2 we just went hammer and tongs and hoped for the best LOL) I paid close attention to my cycles for a few months and I get definite O signs of egg white cervical mucous (EWCM) and cramps. I always get the EWCM for the 3 days before the cramps, and I am pretty defnite that I don't O till I get the cramps because that date is nearly always bang on CD20, or if I throw a 36 day cycle, then it is CD22 but I can tell because the appearance of the EWCM is always the same timing kwim. If the naturopathy is helping you get clearer O signs, then you may have a better chance now of DTD with better timing.

Sounds like then the your 'normal' cycle is CD 34 and the Naturopath should be complementing the Clomid (I assume they are aware you are on Clomid). Can I ask why you are on your 9th month of Clomid? I thought on avg. you will be on it for 6 months/cycles then if nothing, put on something else or another treatment option? (sorry could be my ignorance)
I just wanted to say in relation to the EWCM - I have only got the tiniest bit on this cycle whilst on Clomid and I mean tiny, like 1/4 size of a 5 cent piece and for one day only (CD 12) Clomid has tended to dry out my mucous, which may be the case for you & you are getting the O pain only. Some FS will tell you not to use any synthetic lubrication - even sperm friendly one.
Hi RhiChiChi
Yep my naturopath knows I am taking the clomid. He told me to continue taking it. I total agree but my FS said I could take the clomid. I have had surgery, dye test, tubes check ect but they could not find any problems. My DH has also been checked and everything is fine with him.
Just have to keep trying I guess not much else we can do. Thank you for your thoughts and insight.
Sounds like you have the unexplained infertility that my gf had. She ended up doing IUI (failed) then went onto IVF (one round & success). If that something your FS will look at doing if Clomid is unsuccessful soon? (I think you should ask - my opinion of course)
