Ok i need some HSG questions answered...... I have stopped spotting so my HSG will go ahead today and im totally not prepared as i thought there would be no way i could do it today
Do i need to fast for the HSG??? Can i drink water??? other then that is there anything else i need to do or not do
There's no fasting or anything - just take the pain meds 1hr beforehand.. and make sure you've eaten before you take them.
My HSG was at 1pm, I took the meds at 12pm and had a sandwich & a coffee before taking them
I asked the hospital the day before if I had to fast etc and it was a definate no - you need to have something in your belly before you take the pain meds.
Good luck sweetie - you'll do fine... and it will all be over in about 10-15mins

Holly - thanks (did u get my pm from yesterday??? just wondering lol)... I'm so nervous abt it...... and to top things off i have a tiny bit of spotting again so i dunno if i'll be able to do it tho there was nothing early this morning (or overnight) and it just came now
ETA: I just called them and i can still have m y HSG done YAY.... will let you all know how it goes when i get home (its at 10am but we are leaving soon)

I went to type this message when i got home around lunch time but i was feeling so sick so i just closed it
HSG didnt show anything...... the Doctor actually had trouble getting the tube (thingy) into my cervix.... I'm not even sure if he did get it in.... but anyway... they got a couple of shots of the dye in my uterus but NONE in the tubes... apparently the dye would go into my uterus and come straight back out... also he kept saying he couldnt get a seal on my cervix or something..... i have no idea what that meant... but i will get the real results in a couple of days (they are sending it over from Gosford)
So bottom story is that my tubes are blocked..... i have no idea how or why that could be
Also i keep wondering abt my cervix... GYNO said while doing the lap mine was very tight ... now this doc for the HSG had trouble getting the tube through.... would this cause probs with IVF??? (obviously i have no idea about any IVF stuff but im worried now)

MY doctor said my cervical os is very tight but that she could help to open it. Will this affect my efforts to conceive? If so, how?
The cervical os is generally "tight" in women who have never had a pregnancy, and it is very difficult to make such a diagnosis through visual inspection alone. All one needs is a microscopic opening. If you are having regular menses and they are not unusually painful, it is likely that the cervix is open enough. Also, the cervix undergoes changes during the ovulatory period, which makes it very hospitable to sperm transport.
The cervix can be dilated with progressively larger and larger instruments or by placing a small seaweed stem (laminaria) in it and waiting a day. Unless you have some history of infertility, it is doubtful that this would be necessary.
I would wait until a problem developed before I seek treatment for a condition that may not exist. Instrumentation may also damage the cervical mucus-producing structures, although this is unlikely.
I hope this is helpful, and remember that midwives think along these non-interventionist lines, so it is my opinion.
My husband and I have been ttc for 6 months. From the moment we started trying, I knew it wasn't going to be easy for us. Just a little intuition. I have already fired one doctor, had semen analysis done twice, blood work done, and an HSG. The only thing we've come up with so far is I have an unusually tight cervix. Anyone have this? What is done for this?

What do you mean by a tight cervix. If you are referring to the opening being small, that is not a concern. I couldn't even have my hsg done, because I needed to have my cervix dialated. I opted not to have it done. Semen can get through, if blood can pass through. Maybe you have another meaning of the cervix being tight. Hopefully someone can answer your question better.

Melissa I too had the same problem as Lynn when I went for my hsg they couldn't insert the catheter into my cervix. I was dialated 3 times, once for my hsg and twice for ivf, with no success. If you are going for an IUI or IVF ask your RE to do a mock transfer to make sure your cervix is open enough for the catheter. One last piece of advice if you are not comfortable with your RE find one that you like, and one you have confidence in.

I suffered from same problem. My cervix was so tight that HSG test was almost impossible even after dilating the cervix several times. That HSG test was a horrible experience ? too painful. However, my OB said that one of his patients conceived naturally even with a cervix tighter than mine. Wow!!!
Dilating my cervix and mock transfer helped me with my first and second (12 weeks) pregnancies.
Take robyn-d advice and ask for Mock transfer if you are undergoing IVF or IUI.
