Hi girls, just wondering if any of you have had a AMH (ovarian reserve test) done before? I had it done a year ago and mine was adequate. It was done at the time as my GP suspected premature menopause after ultrasounds and bloodtests after I went to her feeling fat and crappy. Was referred back to my OB/GYN who did more tests including the AMH test which came back as adequate and my other results for tests were put done to crappy hormones because of PCOS. I have been on the pill ever since to manage the hormones and when we want to conceive again will prob need to use clomid again. Anyway fast forward a year to now and I had thr test done again as I got sent a letter giving me a form for a free test as the previous test (worldwide) was giving false lows. Because mine was adequate last year I assumed mine would be the same or higher. It wasn't. It is considered low, Im sitting on the 20th% and my OB/GYN said it surprised him too as PCOS quite often bumps the test up too. He said its not catastrophic but something I need to consider. I already have an appoint booked in a month to see him as have been having pain in my ovaries, so will discuss more with him then. Just feeling down, so blessed to have 2 kiddies but wondering if my times up and scared I'm going to go through menopause early (I am only 30!). Anyone else have this test? what did it mean for you?
I had the test July last year. AMH= 1. I was gutted, but we conceived that exact same cycle. It ended in a chemical, but still, there was obviously an egg, whatever the quality. In the following 6 months, we conceived twice. An ectopic from a Clomid cycle and DS from an FSH cycle.
i read recently that AMH is being questioned as a way to measure fertility. A better way is an ultrasound of the ovaries.
Thanks L&B, what is an FSH cycle? I had an ultrasound and the report said all looked normal. Im on the pill so interested if that affects the result. I wasnt when I had the test last year.
I had many amh tests. My levels are really good, and I'm 42. Still no baby. Meanwhile women with lower amh than me have had babies.... So it's not an accurate indication of TTC success. Just a reminder not to waste time.
I had one too, a few months ago after being off the pill for 1 year. I'm 30 and the results came back as being at the very very low end of the normal range for my age. I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 18 so I was expecting a low reading. I was sent off for an ovarian ultrasound and they found early indicators of PCOS returning now that I have stopped the pill in order to TTC. It's a catch 22 for me.
All in all I found the test helpful, it seemed to fit with the findings confirmed by the ultrasound.
The pill affects blood test results as it suppresses ovulation. I don't know if it affects ultrasound results. U/S shows how many follicles are forming each cycle, so maybe that still happens on the pill. Not all follicles contain eggs and not all eggs are viable. I had a follicle count before the FSH cycle. It showed normal level of follicles on my left ovary (6 or 7 I think) and PCO level of follicles on my right ovary (over 20).
FSH is Follicle Stimulating Hormone. It's an injectable fertility drug. With a low AMH, the chemical, my age and history, I didn't want to waste more time trying to conceive naturally, so we tried Clomid. I had a bad reaction to the drug and ended up with an ectopic pregnancy. We then tried FSH and that worked.
Weirdly id had bloods done in july and they mentioned my AMH was on the slight low side. It looks like i got pregnant in August after 3 years TTC. It was the IVF clinic that did the bloods. Im only 25. Im babbling just want you to know im here if you want a chat. Its a extremely difficult journey xxx
