hi bec

i have been on metformin for about 18 months - 2 years. When i first got preg i stopped taking it because i was unsure if i should take it or not (didnt see the dr for 2 weeks) in the time i had stopped i did m/c, dont know if it was caused by the not taking metformin or because when i found out i was in emergency and had x-rays and scans and morphine. But i do think taking it in the first place had everything to do with me getting preg.

As for cos it is about $10 or less $5 concession for the less expensive brand (diaformin) and you get about 50 tabs i think.

The only prob i have with it is if i dont take it with food i i get an upset tummy and end up on the toilet lots.

you probably already know this but I was just googling and found this:

"Do I stop Metformin if I'm pregnant?
No. Several studies have shown that if metformin helps you get pregnant then taking it for the first 3 months also helps to reduce the risk of a miscarriage.
Metformin should be stopped before the second half of pregnancy because it can lower glucose levels in the baby, and this is not a good thing leading up to birth."

Bec - As per Hope's post above, I have heard it is best to stay on Metformin whilst pg & gradually wean yourself off it during pg - a cyber friend of mine did that & she has a healthy little girl after many, many years of ttc. Her daughter is only a few months old but I know one of her sons just turned 18, so that gives you an idea of how long she had been ttc for. She swears that when she fell pg & stopped Metformin that it was the cause of one of her m/c......

I'm sorry your sad news affected your family so badly :( - one of my greatest fears is sharing that we are pg then having to tell them of another m/c.... We never told anyone we were pg the first two times (both were 5/6 weeks losses) then after that I told my mum b/c I needed support. Most people we don't tell til 12 weeks.

Porsche- I got on a website called POSAA which is the polycystic ovary syndrom association of australia and it had quite a bit of interesting research that I didn't know. I alos typed in "reducing risk of miscarriage in women with PCOS" and a great article about a study that had been done came up too. Apparently they don't really know why PCOS caused miscarriage, there are a gamet of reasons becasue there are a gamet of reasons women get the syndrome, so I'm not sure about blighted ovum or chromosonal stuff. I'll have a look though. It was interesting and I want to know why my doc didn't give me any info when I was diagnosed!

Hope- I had the same treatment as you with the follies check and then pregnal. Apparently you o about 24-48 hours after the injection. DTD every night untill you o and then the night after also, my dr said. HTH.

Julia- I was so excited when we found out and both our families have been following our progress. We have a good relationship with both of our families, and they were as excited as we were. I should have thought about how it would affect them, but I was selfishly excited and wanted to share with someone. I know for next time. Interestingly the article I read on metformin and PCOS said that if a woman has a had a miscarriage before she should continue to take metformin in the first trimester to reduce m/c. It was very interesting. Thanks for the info though.

Tammara- thanks for the info on metformin. did your FS prescribe that? My FS has never even mentioned it. I didn't know you had lost one before. It makes your miracle now all the more so doesn't it?

Compared to clomiphene citrate in normal-weight women with PCOS, metformin had a similar ovulation rate (63 vs 67%) but superior pregnancy rates (69 vs 34%) and miscarriage rates (10 vs 38%)6. As metformin was ceased at diagnosis of pregnancy, it would appear that the reduction in prevalence of miscarriage results when metformin is taken prior to rather than after conception. In a carefully controlled trial over 6 months comparing laparoscopic ovarian diathermy (“golf-balling”) with metformin in PCOS women who had not responded to clomiphene, metformin had an identical ovulation rate (55%) but superior pregnancy rates (19 vs 13%) and miscarriage rates (15 vs 29%)7.
Metformin, with exercise and diet, will restore fertility in most women whose PCOS is due to insulin resistance, reducing the need for more costly, invasive and emotionally stressful assisted reproductive interventions.
In two studies, metformin taken before and during pregnancy dramatically reduced the high miscarriage rate seen in PCOS from 42% to 9%8,9. Metformin has now been used extensively during pregnancy for four years without apparent ill-effects but with reduced rates of gestational diabetes10 and severe hypertension in the 3rd trimester. Metformin occasionally reduces absorption of vitamin B12 and B12 levels should be checked in pregnancy.

please don't take this the wrong way as I most certainly don't want to come in here & glote, but I do know that good news helped my very long ttc journey, so I hope you are all ok with me saying this!
Just wanted to let you all know that we had our 6 & 1/2 week scan today, only one bub and everything is great, heartbeat is at 124bpm and bub is now 4mm long! I am so very relieved as I was very concerned that something was going to be wrong!
Thank you to all you wonderful ladies, you have all been amazing through my journey. I will always keep an eye on you all and pop in to say hi from time to time! I can honestly never thank you all enough!

I actually tried to post this yesterday but I lost it. So if a message similar to this is floating around out there, sorry. :lol:

So anyway, I wanted to update you on how I am going with Femara. Now, when I say all this please keep in mind that this is my first run on fertility drugs so I don't have anything to compare to like clomid.

But let me tell you, I HATE IT!!! I started the drugs on Monday, taking them at night time. I have had hot flushes and head aches every day since. Tonight is my last pill so I am hoping that after Saturday these symptoms will pass.

I guess the test will be on Tuesday when I go for a scan to see if I have made any progress.

Hope - i definately think my m/c was a combination of lots, i went into emergency with severe galblladder pain and had exrays, cat scan and some radiology scan aswell as morphene. I had no clue that i would be preg but as i was about to leave the dr came in and told us. And i stopped taking the metformin. I do believe that it was not my time to carry a baby because a few months later i was in surgery having the galbladder out.

Bec - the first thing my FS asked me was about PCOS symptoms and then he got his lil pad out and perscribed it for me to start that day, i think my first appointment was November December and i fell preg late Jan early feb. We had not been using protection for about 10 years and never got preg (unless i m/c which is possible) so i do think the metformin did something, definately would ask for it.

AFM - i had yet another scan today, i had cramps and bleeding tuesday but everything looks good. Besided the ultrasound man being ummm odd to put it nicely. I told him i just want to know there is a heart beat then he tells me oh no that doesnt mean good, he says he had a lady last week with a lovely strong heartbeat but the baby had no head or limbs! last thing i wanted to hear, then he says it good i have my "granny" with me, pitty it was my mum lol

My GP told me I had PCOS but then the OBS/GYNO said I don't plus I has the test for insulin resistance and I am ok there, so Met probably is a waste of time for me.... I do have a script though cos the GP just gave it to me assuming I would be insulin resistant..... makes me want to take it....*insert naughty laugh here*

Nelly - So sorry Femara is not giving you a good run.... I actually thought it was better than Clomid? Could be a myth then. I can sympathise, although I am on Clomid that all the side effects s*ck..

I just realised that all that info might have been taken the wrong way! I know that you may all not want to know the goary in's and out's of PCOS. Sorry if I upset anyone.

Nelly- the first round was the hardest for me too. After that first round it took all my strength to have another go, but things got better. Hang in there!

Keli & Tam- so glad your little bubs are going well! How exciting! Tammara, something must be going around with u/s people. The lady that did mine (knowing full well why I was there) made me feel stupid and like I was wasting her time. Eventually I burst into tears and she was a bit kinder. People just don't think do they?

Julia- my insulin resistence has always been fine, but apparently sometimes your body can mask it. I'm happy to give metformin a go anyway. Then again, if they said stand on my head for three months, I would I suppose!

I'll let you know how I go at the FS tomorrow, if I don't get any answers I'm going to go to another specialist. Anyone know a good one who has any experience with PCOS?

I've been visiting this site each day this week, but found it hard to post a reply. It is good to hear about positive results but I seem to take it hard hearing m/c news. I suppose it stirs memories and makes it real again.
I am interested to hear about the link with metformin and lower risk of miscarriage. I often wonder if it would be easier if I was paying for the treatment or the medication. I don't get much of a say what kind of treatment I will get and I have to wait 4 -6 months each time I want to see a fs specialist. That means my dose of Clomid hasn't increased since starting this process in Oct. Is it different in Australia? Do you have more of a say and can be more experimental with your medication as you are paying for it?

Sorry to be so nosey but was just wondering.
I'm currently on day 12 (i think cos period was very slow to start this month) and just about to head away for a long weekend in northern Scotland. Looking forward to chilling out - let's hope a change of scenery helps bring on ovulation!

Anyway spotting is here GRRR SO sick of it. I think FF is going to say I O'd 2 days a go lol. Not likely.

Well Dh has decided to do 1 last clomid cycle and then straight into IVF. Seeing as he will be away for work from the 26th July to the 10 Spetember we figured it would be better doing IVF rather than IUI as hopefully we get some frosties so I can keep going with the IVF side whilst he is away.

So hurry up AF!

Bec - You didn't upset me with all the info. TTC whilst having issues is confronting in itself anyway.
Interesting about your body masking the insulin...... I have a script for more met so might look into taking it.....KUP about your appt.

Claudette - Glad to hear you are still around. Sometimes it is easier to step back a bit for a while then re-join. The sad news is difficult to take at times, but I remind myself that we need support at times like that, even if it is just cyber hugs.
I don't know how much of a say you get really in Australia compared to the UK but you can certainly push/demand for alternatives / referrals. I know if nothing comes of the lap I will request a referral straight to a FS. Am not going to sit & wait see - it's already been nearly 19 mths of ttc # 2 with 2 m/c during that time.... I can't continue to hope for the best.... Have a great long weekend away

Tammara - I don't mind hearing about your pg, but am only speaking for myself. Are you in a DDC? I can stalk you there :)

AFM: well I took DH with me to my appointment with the FS today so I had the courage to say what I wanted to say. When I told FS I've just had my third m/c he said it was probably just bad luck! I'm not wearing that. I asked about PCOS and he said the chances were a little bit higher of m/c with PCOS, but metformin probably wont help. I said I'd like to try it and he gave me a script at least. He has also asked me to move onto Gonal f which is injectable meds. I'm happy to give it a go, but I don't know how it'll make a difference since clomid always made me o and that's what this new stuff does too. Has anyone else been on Gonal f? (Tammara I heard it was an IVF drug?)
He also gave me a blood thinner thing to take after I o, becasue he thinks that is the problem. He said I was going to rattle with all the meds, but I don't care!
So I at least feel as though I've got some new things to try, but I'm still going to change FS I think. I just don't think mine is on the ball with PCOS.
Gosh that's a lot of writing; sorry!
Now I have to wait untill my levels are back to normal to start the gonal.

Im not sure about the Gonal f, the injections that i can think of are pregnyl and another starting with pro something i think but it may be an IVF drug???? I would say give the metformin a go but make sure you ease yourself into it when i started i was taking one a day for a week or two then i went on to two a day and be sure to eat them with food or you will be rushing to the toilet.

My gf was on Gonal f injections with her first round of IVF - I believe it is the first drug injected to produce O? I can double check with her. GL with everything hun, I'm glad you have changed tactics a bit & I hope you can find a FS that clicks with you.
I couldn't swallow the bad luck bulls*it either - that is just insensitive & dismissive. *Hugs*

Hi Ladies

No DH doesn't get to come home which is why we decided on straight to IVF. That way if we need to go down that path hopefully we can get some frosties so I can continue on whist he is away.

If I really needed him too come home he would but as you say FX the stupid clomid can help out again. I just have this feeling we are waisting our time with it. But it's what DH wants to do and I really can't blame him I mean IVF is expensive and if we can get away with the much cheaper alternative then I can't complain. But in saying that if we do do IVF then I will most certainly push for 2 embryos implanted back. I'm not mucking around any longer. Time is short and I'm heading toward 32 which apparently when your fertility starts to deteriorate.

If your not happy with your FS then change. You have every right to do what YOU feel is best. YOU need to be comfortable with the treatments you want. I'm glad you have some more options now. Maybe they will work? They say a change is as good as a holiday ( you know what I mean).

It doesn't make it less frustrating though.

PS I think I start metformin when we start IVF.

Porsche dont get yourself set on the idea of having two embrios put back. I asked for them to put two in me and they said no for the first time because the embrios looked good and also they said it really doesnt increase your chances that much - i thought 2 embrios = double the chance of working. My Dr said they really only put more than one back if your older than 35 and the embrios dont look the best they can be.

Fingers crossed you get fantastic lil embrios and LOTS of them :) If you have any questions feel free to ask,i cant really answer much about the egg retrieval but everything else i can help if you have questions.

Hello i need some advice today? I reached my surge today on the ovulation kit which is day 14. My husband thinks we should start today to have intercourse,but the doctor said to have intercourse tomarrow which is the next day after i reach the postive.Have intercousre every other day after that.What do you think i should do.? has anyone had the same adivice from there doctor to have intercouse the next after i got my postive today on my ovulation kit!!!! Porsche- hopefully the clomid will work and you don't need IVF, but it sounds like a good plan for IVF, esp if DH can't be around. I really thought clomid would work for me but now I don't think it is going to and time is running out for me too, so am getting my head around doing IVF. Hope the metformin helps too!

Claudette- most FS doctors in Australia would see you more often and alter the dose but we pay privately here, do you get it on NHS? Maybe thats the difference and why you only go every 4 months. Sorry you are feeling bad, hopefully your long weekend was fun!

Linda - I would definately DTD on the day of your surge, that way the sperm will be hanging around to meet the egg. GL

Saffy - I feel the same as you atm. DH & I haven't even DTD this month & I even got EWCM & O Pains and just didn't bother! I think we are both at the stage where we need a break. 6 months full on DTD on Clomide & no success and then nothing prior to that..... I am hoping to just enjoy this month as it is DH b'day on the 19th then I go in for my lap on the 25th.... hopefully the lap is successful and then my chances to conceive are higher.

Just a q - have any of you used Royal Jelly to assist with egg quality? I was doing some research on the internet & people are really positive about using fresh royal jelly....

I think we are perfectly normal in having a down period. I feel the same ATM. I know we will get better even though right now it seems impossible. I wish I could un-know all the TTC stuff I have learned and just be totally ignorant lol.

Saffy have you had a consultation for IVF yet?

Richichi I have only just discovered on line the benefits of the royal jelly. I've heard that green tea can help in the CM department as well. I've not used any of those. I've heard something about robitussin as well but I can't remember what it is supposed to help with.

Tammara thanks for the tips on the 2 emby thing. I will keep that in mind when and if we need it. I'll still be pushing though.

Porsche- hopefully the clomid will work and you don't need IVF, but it sounds like a good plan for IVF, esp if DH can't be around. I really thought clomid would work for me but now I don't think it is going to and time is running out for me too, so am getting my head around doing IVF. Hope the metformin helps too!

Claudette- most FS doctors in Australia would see you more often and alter the dose but we pay privately here, do you get it on NHS? Maybe thats the difference and why you only go every 4 months. Sorry you are feeling bad, hopefully your long weekend was fun!

Tammara- I love crystal on american idol too, she is way better than the others, I hope she wins.

AFM- depressed today, had my first acupuncture this morning which I was really looking forward to and it was good, I like the woman who does it as well, but still feeling down about my prospects. I have no faith whatsoever that I will get pregnant this month, as we barely DTD, I feel like i've just given up and am resigned to IVF. Oh well, trying to ignore the TWW and just distact myself.

If it is worth anything to the ladies considering IVF, once we decided we would do it i felt a huge weight off my shoulders and the stress im sure your feeling was almost gone. It was like it was out of my hands and all i had to do was wait and not stress about dtd on the right day :)

We are all a bit down aren't we? I know I am. It's hard to be positive all the time, we are all bound to go through the negs sometimes.

Saffy- if clomid isn't working it's nice to know there are other options. As Tammara said, maybe you will feel relieved, rather than resigned, if you decide to do IVF. I also found that although Acupuncture didn't help be get UTD, I felt much better when I was getting it and had a more positive frame of mind knowing I was doing something positive for my body. I'm considering going back to it, for the relaxation time!

Julia-Dh and I had a month off after I had my op. We even DTD at a time when I couldn't possibly get UTD! Oh my! What scandal! It was nice actually to not have to worry about all the other stuff. "Is this close enough to o?" etc. Your lap is coming up fast! Hopefully all goes well, and you get UTD straight after! I've never heard about the royal jelly thing, but I might give it a go. Can you take it with other meds?

Porsche- Thanks for the info on Green tea. I'd not heard about that either. With all the things they tell us to do or not do, it's no wonder we think about TTC 24/7!

Linda- I'd DTD every day. A few forums I've read said after months of TTC, they DTD every day around o the month the fell pregnant.

Claudette- hope your feeling a bit better. Can you contact your FS to ask about your dose? Maybe you can sort it out over the phone? (My FS prefers to consult over the phone about things like that anyway)

AFM- Operation 'change entire life' is underway. I've gone on a strict low GI diet, started Metformin, started Gonal f injections by the end of the week and scans every few days to check I don't overstim my ovaries (poor dears, they're been though so much!) Also trying to find time to work, exercise, be a good mum and wife, stay sane etc. Also start some sort of blood thinner stuff after o (another injection!). I've had to start a diary purely for this stuff! I've given this regime 3 months to work or I'm giving up entirely. My sister said she'd donate eggs for IVF if mine are dud, so that's nice to know if we get to that.
100 days...I can wait that long...I think!

Firstly I have to apologise for all my wingeing over the last 2 weeks. No one posted anything which upset me - honest! I was just feeling a bit down and emotional - must be the clomid cos i'm not usually that crazy! Was cryin last week cos there wasn't anything tasty in the house to eat!!
Anyway, was away with my bf for a lovely weekend and have booted myself up the bum.There are so many folk less fortunate than myself! We just have to stay positive. It was really nice to get away and eat out and have a few drinks without thinking -'i shouldn't be drinking etc!'
I've started using the OPK this month. Who knows? Least I'll know if I have ovulated.
So sending positive vibes to all....

Bec - My goodness, no wonder you need a diary to keep tabs on all that! Best of luck! I have gone back to my diet too! Don't know much about the Royal Jelly thing.... I am going to the Naturopath next week so I will ask her about it. I was going to go back to acupuncture but I think he will want me to go back on the herbs as well & I don't feel like doing that atm.

Claudette - I bet the Clomid is making your moods go haywire - I certainly know the feeling & was taking the lowest dose! GL with the OPK's - I used them last cycle and it showed I O whereas in the past I got nothing....

AFM- was a right clomid head yesterday, feeling better today even though it is v dreary outside. I am guessing this is another side effect of clomid but when I looked in the mirror last night I discovered my face is COVERED in pimples, I'm 37 for god's sake!!

Well I went to the FS this morning for a scan and it looks like the Femara is doing its job. I have one reasonable sized follicle on my left ovary and a few little ones on my right. I have to go back on Friday for another scan to see if the left follicle gets bigger. Apparently it isn't quite big enough yet.

But at least we are on track.

And my boss sat down with me today to see how I was going. He was very encouraging and letting me know that I should not let the stress of work get to me as it is just a job and I have bigger more important things to concentrate on. I feel so blessed to be in the workplace I am and with my immediate supervisor I have. I know it is going to make this journey so much easier.

Well ladies, I hope you are having a good week. Even though my experience with all this has been limited, my last week on drugs has made me appreciate what you have all been going through so much more. I have so much admiration for you and wish you all the luck in the world.

Nellym - I have a very easy boss as well. If I need time off then that is fine. And quite often she doesn't make me use any annual leave or sick leave. I really do have a great job. I'm very lucky.

Saffy - I loved you question about the royal jelly. It made me have a chuckle. The things we all do hey? Crazy.

AFM I've got EWCM for the first time on my own. No clomid lol. DH and I are TTC this cycle even though it is after our M/C. But I'm not really trying IYKWIM. I'll just be thankfull for a non medicated cycle so I can get AF sooner so we can really start trying.

I'm doing my OPK's atm so I think I might get a + one today. FX anyway. I have a tender tummy as well which is a tell tale sign for me. I'm a bit excited actually.

AFM: Not a lot happening here. I've started the Metformin. I had the worst stomach ache the first night, but since then I've been careful to take it after dinner and I've been fine. Anyone ever heard of people getting really bad headaches on it? Not sure if it's the Metformin or my Coeliac disease playing up. I get my BT to see if levels are back normal after m/c tomorrow and if all is ok, Gonal injections start Saturday! I'm actually quite excited. I'm hoping that my cycle will be a bit shorter than when I was on Clomid, 37 days is a long wait! But what will be, will be I suppose.
Quick question: Has anyone else found this website from a Belgian doct called Yvonne Wilson promising pregnancy within 3 cycles for woman with PCOS? Just wondering what your take on it is. My insticts say 'Fraud' but my hearts says 'if only...'
