Luteal Phase Defect - can someone answer questions for me please?

    Hi everyone,

I have unexplained infertility which doctors diagnosed as PCOS but Im starting to suspect is a luteal phase defect. I have a BMI of 19 (mildly underweight), no excess facial hair, no diabetes, onl;y the unreleased eggs on my ovaries. Im now beginning to think this might be because i dont produce sufficient LH to release the egg or enough progesterone to have the egg implant.

If you look at my chart for December I started spotting at 7dpo and spotted/ had very light bleeding for 10 days. Is this what happens to you, too? Lots of spotting and prolonged periods? Im having a cd21 BT done on Saturday to check it out. In the mean time in FURIOUS that its taken me doing research myself and charting to catch this!

    Thanks for any feedback

Take your charts and your knowledge back to a different doctor and tell them you want them to do up bloodwork and tests to check that you ARE ovulating and that your luteal phase is regulated and of normal length. The more info you go armed with the better.

Personally I might spot a little before AF but only in the 12-24hrs before she shows up.

HI there - I'm not sure about the Luteal phase defect, but I have PCOS and am the same as you - slightly underweight, no excess facial hair, no diabetes. I have the classic Polycystic Ovaries and my LH and FSH are around the wrong way at ovulation time. Also prior to having my DD I did not get my periods regularly. I think PCOS can come in many different shapes and forms, my FS said that it was rare for any 2 cases to be exactly the same.

I know that probably hasn't helped with your question, but just wanted to let you know that you weren't alone in being an 'A-Typical PCOS' sufferer.

    GL with everything.

Thanks Janie Im just so confused at the moment and I really dint want IVF to be my only option for concieving. I know I can fall pregnant because we have a 3yo DD but we have tried for 2 years for #2 with no luck. I am a SAHM at the moment so we really cant afford IVF. I tried 6 rounds of clomid and that didnt help so IUI/ IVF is the only other option

Hi and I also have PCOS, but I do not have a LPD. I know it sucks finding a problem, but it can work in your favour, knowledge is power. I really hope this gets sorted for you quickly and you can get your BFP. Has your GP considered Metaformin? What about chasteberry (natural herb)?

I take Vitex (chasteberry) and I also visited a naturopath a few weeks ago and got given a whole heap of herbs/ vitamins that seem to be helping. He doesnt think metaformin will help because I dont have insulin resistance. I basically have nothing in PCOS except the "beads" on my ovaries. I had my hormones checked a week ago and they were spot on. I guess the cd21 BT will give a better insight to see if there is a problem with my progesterone levels. I do that on Saturday...im cd19 or 3dpo today.

    Thanks for your support

Glad the herbs are helping and support is what we are here for. By the way, did you spot while on clomid?

Not that I remember, Maruschke. I just remember it giving me horrible nightmares and night sweats and drying up all my CM. Is that happening to you at the moment?

I'm not hormonal or having night sweats, I just wake up in the middle of the night and scream at DH like a banshee to turn the AC on. And yeah it's drying up my CM so we use preseed.

I too have PCOS and through research that i have done, i believe that you need to have at least 2 signs of PCOS to be diagnosed with it eg Ovarian cysts & hormonal imbalance, or Ovarian cysts and Insulin resistance etc.
It sounds really slack of your Dr to not investigate further and just write you off as having PCOS.

I havent been diagnosed with PCOS but I have a LPD. My AF's come early - I am lucky to make it to cd21 to do my day 21 bloods. My length of my AF has also changed varying from 3-11 days...

Like u I didn't want ivf to be my only option.

There is supposed to be a timeline from what I have researched that kind of goes:

    Bloods/ scans
    Metformin
Clomid (or a combo of both)
Lap- diagnostic (sometimes before clomid to ensure no blockages)
    Iui
    Ivf

There is a forth step for chronic pco That many Drs don't recommend due to the risk of lesions.

My dr however skipped bloods, skipped clomid and when metformin didn't work didn't tell me but during a lap did ovarian drilling.

This is where they in lamens terms..... Burn small holes in the ovaries/cysts to help them to work again. It's To encourage ovulation and with ovulation and removal of cysts the ovaries get a chance to start producing hormones again.

It worked for me in that I got my periods back after 2 years. The Dr now thinks my ovaries may have gone into hyperstimulation though because I since developed a 4cm complex cyst...... But I'm still in diagnostics of this. It could be an oversized leutal cyst from my last o. Will find out in a week.

    Point is........

    Ask about it.

Are you not ovulating at all??

If you are o-ing you can go on progesterone to support a sticky egg.
