I was in a similiar boat to you, just a different problem. One of my tubes were blocked and my FS at the time just threw Clomid at me and told me to come back in a couple of months if it didn't work... no mention of corrective surgery, or a lap to remove the tube. It took me a good 6 months to make an appointment with another FS, because I was so distraught by things my FS had said to me!

I found another FS and within 4 weeks of my first appointment, I'd my lap and my bad tube was removed.

Like you, before I'd even started IVF, I felt my breaking point was close by and hit rock bottom a few times. Finding my new FS was like finding a light at the end of the tunnel.
