    ...nothing to freeze!?!

I just got a letter from my FS...

They collected 8 eggs, one was immature... 6 fertilised and I had one transferred... they all were supposedly 'high grade' and were looking really good at my ET...

But now, I just got a letter stating that none of them were suitable to freeze... I am absolutely GUTTED.. why? What makes an embryo not good enough to freeze? Does it stop developing? Is there something wrong?

What about my Transferred embie - will that stop developing and be 'unsuitable' too?

What makes it unsuitable? Can I still get a BFP from my tfer? does an embie in the uterus have a better chance?

    I am really shocked...

I really can't say anything as I have no idea but thought you might like one of these and a bit of this for your little one on board

    What a shock for you!
I hope you've got the one good one in the bunch on board

Were you going for day 3 or day 5 transfer?

Embryos have to be of a certain quality to survive the freeze/thaw process. There is no point freezing lots of embryos and having none of them thaw (not saying that if they freeze one it is guaranteed to survive the thaw).

I ask about what level of growth you were goin for because usually an embryo will get to day 3 on the power of the egg and then goes to day 5 on the power of the sperm - so there is often a lot of drop off between day 3 and 5.

They always put the very best one back in for you and often leave the rest to develop a little further before they freeze them (embryos don't all develop at the same rate - and it is always worth giving the slower ones a chance to catch up). Also, my FH was always much more positive about the number of embryos that we would have to freeze on transfer day than she was a few days later. When I challenged her about this she said her opinion is always that you give the embryo that you are transferring the best chance possible and that includes talking up the others because there is no point having you upset. She was more straight with me after that conversation.

I suppose what I am saying is that if your embie doesn't stick ( that it does - it was the best one afterall) I would be asking the FS if they had an opinion on why the others weren't suitable for freezing - was it failure to develop or fragmentation or some other factor and is there anything that can be done about it.

    Thanks guys!

I called them today to get some more info - I would think that it would be kinder for them to call with that sort of information rather than send that horrible letter.

I spoke with an embryologist who said that all 6 embies were looking great and behaving well on the day of ET - which was Day 4. The next time they were checked - I am guessing day 6 because day 5 was a Sunday - 4 of my embies hadn't changed since day 4... and one developed to blastocyst - but was of very poor quality.

I asked what that would mean for my transferred embie... whether that one would have just 'stopped' developing too - seeing that they're from the same 'batch' - she said "It's definitely a real possibility - but stay positive that the one we've chosen was the best looking one"

Seriously, this first cycle has been a rollercoaster for me! I reaaaally wasn't prepared... I guess if I do go through another cycle - I'll know what to expect, and I might be plesantly surprised

Our second cycle was so much better - at least partly cause we pared back our expectations enormously. Every little step that we proceeded was a major victory and we just took heart that we were inching toward our goal.

Don't give up on this little embie just yet. There have been plenty of mummies with just the one who've ended up with little babies to hold.
