    weight issues and IVF

    Hi everyone

I'm just about to head to my next gyno appt and have a question... is there anyone on here who was obese (150kgs ish) and has done ivf? My gyn seems to think it would be ok, but I'd like to hear from anyone who has gone through this with the added weight issue.

    Much thanks

Well not personally (although I have gained alot of weight through my 3 cycles, about 5-8kg per cycle)
but a very good friend of mine was 140 when she started ivf. They had 4 cycles with no success so which was most likely due to her weight so her GP put her on reductil. She walked 3x per week and ate healthy. Within 7 months she lost 45kg. On the 5 cycle (after losing the weight) bang. Pregnant.

She has now lost another 20 kg from breastfeeding and looks FANTASTIC.

    Hugs hon,

    Sammie

    Hi Sparkysgirl,

I'm a big girl (currently 110kgs) and we've been doing IVF for 2 years without any luck. When I first started I had managed to lose 30kgs to get down to 95kg. However, with every failed cycle plus a back injury that required surgery and 3 months off work, I've put 15kgs back on.

My FS has strongly recommended that I lose weight, but he has never refused to treat me because of my weight. I do know that he believes that our failure to fall pregnant is due to my weight (a claim that I am a bit dubious about - I've seen plenty of larger women get pregnant naturally, so why not on IVF??? All the tests I've had done indicate that there is no reason why I could not fall pregnant - that blasted "unexplained infertility" diagnosis is so frustrating). Despite all that, after our last failed cycle this month DH and I have decided to take 6 months off to try and lose some more weight so we have a better chance next year. I am hoping to get under 90kgs for our next attempt in June / July 2010.

It's bloody disheartening I know - I hope you find an FS who is understanding about the particular difficulties faced by larger women. I'd be interested to hear how you go if you want to PM me sometime. I'd be happy to answer any questions about our IVF experience.

Hi girls and thanks for the response

Well I went today and simply put, he's asked me to get to 120 before he treats me. However...

my hubby has lsc due to meds he has to take. This could end up depleting his sperm count even more. My Gyn said that if it comes to the point of it dropping a lot (last 5 months its been stable) then he would treat me regardless of the weight.

It is heavily risky for obese people, which is why he is reluctant - as am I. Sadly the weight thing has been a lofeling thing and isn't going to go away in a hurry, but with hubby's situation we are running low on time.

So, I have until May to get as much off as possible. He said he'll reassess then what to do.

Wish me luck! I need a better 2010!
