Usually not a lot... It seems that the first appointment is usually the FS asking you lots of questions, sending you for lots of tests and that's about it. They may give you a run down on what options are available.
When you get to the second appointment with test results available options will be presented for you and decisions will possibly be made about the plan ahead. Usually this is the best time to start quizzing your FS - when they have the answers.
As for the SA... DH was offered the option of doing one on the spot, but we hadn't abstained for long enough so we had to wait. That way DH ended up producing the sample at home and delivering it to them rather than having to do so on site.
our first FS appointment was pretty much text book to what BW has just said - lots of questioning about medical history for both DH and myself, confirmation of test results we'd already had (was already diagnosed with PCOS by GP and gyno), outlined the tests we'd need (and like BW's hubby, DH was able to produce his sample at home and drop it at the lab) - and gave us a basic idea what we'd be going through. were sent off with a patholgy request a mile long, and once the "vampires" had done there thing, we were able to go back and get started.
We just had our first app with FS this week.
We had a lot of questions thrown at us but because we were pretty organised and had been trying seriously we were able to give him a lot of info to help us cut to the chase.
We had organised dh's semen analysis so results arrived before we went. It took 7 working days to get the results. If you want to get it done on the spot, then I think dh needs to abstain for no more or no less than three days prior to the appointment.
My blood tests these are being redone as they were 6 months old, checking hormones and absolutely everything else.
I also took along my bbt charts and past ultrasound etc.
We have been trying for a year and are both 38 so we were basically advised of the path ahead in the first visit. We will be having a Lap asap and progressing to IUI or IVF straight after.
I guess if you havent done any testing prior to your appointment then you'll have to get all that done and go back for 2nd app.
I hope you have a really positive visit to the Fs. I found it a relief, progress!!
Good luck!!!!

We also took all my charting stuff, had to give detailed histories on both sides, I also had an internal u/s done on the spot, referred off for BT's, DH had already done a SA. I was booked straight in for a lap given I was able to show I O'ed already and there wasn't much else to support other issues, and DH had another SA on the same day as the Lap.
Ella's Mum, just wanted to wish you goodluck with your appointment on Wednesday.
Our first appointment is on Friday. Our GP organised all our tests so they would be all done by the time we get there.
DH has had 2 SA's, the first one needed to be re checked.
I had a blood test and ultrasound including an internal one.
Also got my pap smear up to date as well.
I have a friend who was seeing the same FS and she said pretty much the same as the girls, he sent her and her DH off for all of the above tests, plus a blood test for her DH? I'm not sure why? Then once done, they returned to go over the results and formed a plan of attack.
Will be thinking of you on Wednesday..
forgot to add, my friend said her FS also did an internal examination. Don't know if that is normal or not?
Nic
Nic, the blood tests for DH are because they will usually check the male hormone profile as well to ensure that everything is ok... and they will also do a full STD screen for both of you.
The blokes get off slightly easier, but not completely free!
I pretty much agree with the other ladies here - our first FS visit was lots of talking. She already had lots of tests results from our GP and the andrologist who DP had been referred to. So we got the paperwork for blood tests and lots of information to read and a DVD to watch, with a decision to be made about either IUI or IVF. We went back the following week for an u/s - timed at CD12 to confirm my follices were doing what they were supposed to be doing and talked some more about starting IVF. And here we are now, on my first down reg cycle and about to finish the pill on Tuesday. It all happens pretty quickly once you have all of the information and can formulate a plan!
My first appointment with FS was alot of talking. We gave him details of our TTC background and he did an internal u/s and confirmed that I had PCOS. He sent us off for a bt which tested everything for me and DH. DH did a SA as well and just dropped it off at the clinic. When we went back for our second visit we went through the results of the bt and SA and then worked out a plan from there.
Our plan worked eventually so I hope yours does too. Wishing you all the best. Take care.
