You can request to work part time ... but i think its really up to the employer as to whether or not they will say yes. I looked into this when applying for my maternity leave and read some info on the industrial relations website and it said :
(this is nsw rule, by the way... maybe u could look up what the legal requirement is in Qld.. its probably same or similar)Refusing to allow part-time work may amount to discrimination
An employer's refusal to allow a woman to work part-time in connection with pregnancy or return from maternity leave may be found to be unlawful discrimination. The Anti-Discrimination (Carers' Responsibilities) Amendment Act 2000 (NSW) makes it unlawful to discriminate against an employee or job applicant on the ground of caring responsibilities.
i am hoping to return to work part time too. I think they have to consider it fairly and not just say no straight up without even seeing if it will work or not.
