How long have you been working there? Is it a privately run practice? Or public sector? Do you know if you have a Work Place Agreement? Have you had a look in your original Terms and Conditions of Employment?
The government have set down legislation which entitles parents to a total of 52 weeks unpaid leave (on a shared basis, so apart from a week at birth, you have to take the leave separately) to care for their newborn.
