Re: Working Mummies Support Group #2

So, I'm home. Survived. It was crap.

I didn't have my access sorted so I did nothing all day. Might sound good but it just sucked. I was so bored. All I could think of was the three pieces of me that I left at home. I didn't know where they were or what they were doing and i got a bit upset. I've not felt like that at work before.

I need to get onto a good project, with some good people, or this is going to be terrible. Unlike the other two times when I've been back to work, I don't have a finite end date so I'm think I'm going to struggle.

DH asked how did I go? Was it good? I said no it was awful. He looked a bit shocked. "Didn't you enjoy any of it?" So I told him I enjoyed the train trip in and out and my lunch break. Not too much of an exaggeration. Sigh.

There is nothing worse than boredom OP, and is bound to leave you with too much time to think about home.

Can you think of an end date? E.g. we want to travel round Oz at somepoint for a year, so although I don't know when that is going to be - I have that idea as something to look forward to, not just thinking about a lot of working years ahead of me.

I think it takes 4 weeks to really get into things in all new jobs (or returns) - I had to have today off due to bad ankle and having to get it x-rayed - so I have only worked 8 days so far - and I know I don't feel settled yet - although I am enjoying it.

Do you know when you are likely to get onto a project? I also sympathies there as in your line of work (similar to what I have done in the past) the time between projects can be made to feel like 'wasted' time (even though in reality it isn't) and when you don't feel any value in what you are doing then it is hardest to reconcile with being at work as you know you are adding 'value' at home.

    Oh dear ...

Yes, on my first day, there was nothing ready ... no desk set up, no computer ... by mid morning I had a file and a secretary and a dictaphone, by the end of the day I had a phone and a computer!

    I hope tomorrow is better

Are you doing Mon Tues Wed?

Wysiwyg you have a point, it can definitely take time to settle in. How's the ankle by the way?

I was just so frustrated - I literally couldn't do anything. Couldn't even use the phone. And my line manager wasn't there half the day, so I couldn't even ask him for stuff to read.

The potential project is the other issue. It's based up the other end of the city, top of Collins, which is good, but its in Tech operations, which is not where my strengths lie. I am not excited about it, at all. I could start there as soon as I have my access sorted.

So the people need to be wonderful and nice and engaging or I am going to struggle even more.

Edit: P, I should normally be working Thu Fri in the office, Mon Tue from home, as two half days. But I needed to go into the office to get my access sorted before I can work remotely.

Re: Working Mummies Support Group #2

I missed those last couple, sorry.

I'm so sorry you've had such a crap day. It must really hurt, physically hurt getting back into full time work if it's not where you actually want to be, or who you want to be with.

I'm sure it will get better. I hope whatever your favourite parts of your work you loved the best are what fill your days from here on, and that the working from home goes super well too.

    Big fat hugs, love

Thanks. I'm sure it will get better. It has to!!! Nice to be able to vent it all out though.

I'll go back tomorrow and chat with my manager and get some stuff to read.

And I surely will get access. Somehow.

Ah, sucks doesn't it OP - You just want to get into it (cos lets be honest its a nice distraction rather than worrying about how the LO are faring)

It took me a good couple of weeks to settle in this time, and knowing I'd had my last bubba and had no more extended leave planned made it harder. It does get easier though babe. Hope the following few work days are more productive.

Hope you also got some awesome cuddles after work

Re: Working Mummies Support Group #2

No access still. Ah well. Manager said something about "we will do that on Thursday" and I said "ah I can't get in on Thursday, I don't have care for my kids". So it looks like I'll have a day off, of sorts, as I don't have access, let alone remote access to work from home.

At least working from home (or not working from home as the case may be) I can get stuff done and spend time with the kids, unlike right now.

    Anyway.

TT, that sounds tough. Any chance you can swap or request a different shift or something?

OP - that really sucks! It's bad enough when you need to be at work away from your kids when you actually have something to be doing at work, let alone just sitting around all day!

TT - I feel for you, 3 days away would be really tough! How long is the commute?

I'm on the countdown to starting my new job, 5 work days left to go here, I start my new job on the 1st July! Starting to get really nervous about it all now, hope I'm not making a bad decision, but the flexibility this new place is offering I will find no where else.

That sucks OP, and is what most annoys me about employers and part time, the main reason they are not so keen often is because they can't be bothered to get organised and think they can just do whenever, all it takes is a little more planning, but they expect all the flexibility to come from you.

Access in big companies is often shocking, my last contract was a big consultancy and it took them 5 weeks to get me my own laptop, and when there was an email issue a week to resolve it!! Yet when things don't happen they always mention the part-time aspect never the fact their processes and response times are shocking.

OP that's very crappy! Such a waste of your time being there, at least if you're at work with plenty to do it goes quickly and you have less time to think of home. Big big hugs to get through today, not too much longer til you can go home and cuddle your kiddies.

TT that sounds pretty awful! Is there any way you can swap with someone? Big hugs to you too.

Jaycee your new job sounds great, I'm sure you'll smash it! Hope your last days where you are go quickly

Wysiwyg I get what you mean about flexibility and access. I used to work Fridays at home and it was easily my worst work day. We can't just hook up any printer to the laptop, it won't let you install it. I don't have a fax and won't buy one plus pay for a phone line just for one day's work. And then the mobile modem they gave me was so useless I used our home internet, but even that barely worked on the work computer - I once took 45 minutes to write and send an email because it had attachments. Anywho, all these issues were put down to me wanting to work from home, rather than trying to find a solution. So now I won't bother working from home again.

So I got access finally, then logged in and got all these errors. Couldn't start email program, plus an annoying error that kept popping up and wouldn't go away. Back on the phone. Laptop needs to be rebuilt and will be done in the next "2-3 business days"!!!!!!

I literally feel like doing this

Re: Working Mummies Support Group #2

Aaaah I do have a fracture in my ankle, I thought was all fine but went to docs to get DD ear check and expecting report to say no issues and I have a fracture through the calcaneum!! So a camwalker fitted tomorrow after work, I have to go in, have only just started my contract is only three months so need to do something. It doesn't hurt - so no point staying home. They said 4-6 weeks in the camwalker - it had better be 4 we are off on holiday in 4.5 - surely the fact I am in no pain will mean I am a quick healer?? We have spent more on medical expenses in past two weeks than all year if you don't count hearing aids and is worst timing as haven't had any pay since beginning of May.

Yes work are understanding, but I only get paid for the hours I work, so I can't afford to not work full hours and because is so early in contract that is so short is just awkward.

    Working Mummies Support Group #2

Hope it heals quick for you wysiwyg

Well of the two jobs I have applied for, looks like I will get an interview for both. Touched base with the manager of my first preference role yesterday and somehow managed to tip my coffee into her tissue box. Great impression!! Anyway she was good about it and we had a laugh, good ice breaker I guess. I left a new box of tissues on her desk this morning hahaha She told me to prepare for interview so just waiting on when it is.
The other I have an interview for Friday Morning so have been preparing tonight (between trying to get children to sleep and having a massive fight with DH - sigh!!!!)
I plan to ace the interviews, pick which role I want and turn this crap storm aka my life around in the coming weeks! Wish me luck!

Lol at the coffee in the tissue box MN, definitely a funny ice-breaker! Good luck with both interviews, I'm sure you'll ace both and get to pick which you'd prefer
