Sam is another SUA baby. The full run down is that if may be an indication of chromosomal abnormalities (usually ruled out in the NT scan) and can indicate problems with the heart or kidneys (most of these can be ruled out in the morphology scan). Ours wasn't picked up until 18 weeks and when I read about it panicked as they didn't tell me that the scans I'd already had were clear of a lot of the other things.

You will probably find that you will have a few extra scans during your pregnancy to check on your baby's heart and growth. We had scans at 24 and 32 weeks, mostly they are just precautionary and don't really pick up problems.

SUA can also be linked with low birthweight and early arrival... This is one that effected us - Sam was 2.48 born at 36 weeks. A girlfriend of mine also had an SUA baby born at 36 weeks (2.1kg), but both little boys are doing absolutely fantastically now. It does seem that most SUA babies do make it to full term, though.

Sam also had to have a renal (kidney) scan when he was about 8 weeks old just to do a final check that everything was fine. Again, they tell me it's just routine and rarely do they find anything, but it's best to tick all the boxes.
