Specialist scared the hell out of DH and I.

I am freaking out now i was going along nicely just waiting to be told yep you need a c section because the placenta is in the way but after what the specialist said today now i am going to be waiting for the bleeding and expecting to be put in hospital early and am worried i could actually die.
Here is what happened today.
My specialist did an u/s the placenta is still covering the cervix it has moved a touch and cervix is not in the middle of it anymore it is slightly to one side and he said that it is highly unlikely to move in his 50 years experience he has never seen one move from where mine is located but has given me a 1-2% chance of it moving out of the way enough for a normal birth SH#T SH#T!.
So he gave me the scarey speech NO SEX! at all i am not to do anything physical only light housework do not let myself get tired or run down i am not to be on my own at any time and i am not allowed to be more than 30 minutes from hospital at all times so no travel no nothing.
Then he went on to say the mortality rate of this kind of placenta previa is 1 in 1000 and i will definately bleed 3-4 times before bub is born i am to not panic but get to the hospital ASAP and if its a little bleed i will be in for a few days if the bleed is heavy i will be staying in hospital on bed rest until bub is born and if i hemorrage they will deliver baby he said i will most likely need a blood transfusion and could have a retained .
He also said that i need a specialist to do the c section not a registrar as it will be difficult.
So all in all it pretty much scared the hell out of me.
Is it possible to not bleed or hemorrage with a grade 4 placenta? has anyone had a pregnancy were all was well just needed a c section to deliver?

oh hun . Sorry to hear you got such a scare, some Dr's really could work on their bed side manners. I havent been through this myself, so havent got any advice. Hope someone cant shed some light for you.

My friend had grade 4 placenta previa but hers moved on the 19th week scan.

Wow, that's pretty full on huh? I have no idea on what the outcomes might be of grade 4 placenta praevia, but just thought, maybe get a referral to another doctor? Just to get a second opinion?? Good luck hun, I can imagine it's all very stressful for you

Everything the doctor told you is the worst case scenario, he has to, by law, tell you that so you can be well informed in any decisions you may make. But just because it COULD happen, doesn't mean it WILL happen. Any good obstetrician will tell you the same information but maybe just in a different way.
Good luck with everything, this must be incredibly stressful for you both.

It is scary and he was informing you of all the things so you are aware and can act if need be, g4 pp are high risk and everything he said is right. The risk isnt just to you bet bub too.

i had a grade 4 and when my ob told me at 22 weeks, he said to go home and google it and have a read. he said it might move but chances of that was highly unlikely. needless to say i went home and cried for 2 days! i started spotting at 30 weeks and went for a repeat scan at 31 weeks which confirmed that the placenta had not moved. i was then told no more sex! he did say at 22 weeks that i was to stay within an hour of a hospital at all times tho ( i work in a hospital so when i was at work it was bit of a comfort to know that i had people around if anything happened). i stopped work at 32 weeks on advice from people at work and my ob who was starting to get very worried about me (i also had other complications going on). at 34 + 1 weeks i had a bleed of around 50-80mls. scared the cr*p out of me! i was admitted on bed rest where they wanted me to stay until DS was born. my ob was hoping to get me to 38 weeks but didnt think that was going to happen. i had an ultrasound the next day which also showed i had a vasa previa. no one told me at this stage what it was and kept dodging my questions about it. the next day at 34+3 days i had another significant bleed, much bigger then the previous one and my ob decided that he couldnt risk the pregnancy any further and i had a c section that night. they had to cut thru the placenta to get to DS and i lost 600mls but never had a transfusion. it really was scary and still is when i think about it!

listen to what the specialist said but try not to work yourself up too much about it. i know thats easier said then done but its the best advice i can honestly give you. arm yourself with plenty of information on it and talk to people that have had it before. join L'il aussie prems as there are mums on there who have had it before and could also offer you advice. otherwise feel free to pm me if you ever want to talk or just want to ask a question.

Thanks teresa that has made me feel a little better i have read everything i can and am a little worried but trying to stay positive.

Thepixie-I know tell me about it i just wanted a normal pregnancy and baby and was hopeing my rollercoaster ride was over but this little girl wants to make her presence know so i guess i will have to soldier on until we get through this.

I am concerned about who will do the c section as i am going public and did so with all my other children which was great but the high risk specialist said i am to have a senior ob not a registrar or trainee ob as this will be risky.
How do i have a say who does the operation when it is pre booked for a certain day and you get who you get i want someone experienced in pp to do the c section.

One good thing about the public system is that if they're worried they get the best person for the job and they have a few to choose from. I am sure they will get the person with the most experience to do you CS. Try to put that worry away if you can.
I hope you find your journey much better than the ob has told you, Try and focus on taking care of yourself. Pampering too.
