Hi Sallymarie - Prunes have always done the trick for me. Be careful though, I ate a whole packet once out of frustration and had diarrhoea for 8 hours straight! I think about 20-25 prunes will be enough to get everything back into working order.

You could also try Prune juice. You can get it from the supermarket. Also kiwifruit are a mild laxative and I've heard grated apple (no skin) can help but not sure on this one.

Licorice does it every time - the stuff from Darell Lee or supermarket.

Just make sure that you don't get the proper licorice root as I am sure Alan said that real licorice was linked with premature labour.

It is a very normal thing to have in early pregnancy. I get it all the time (when pg) so frustrating and well damn uncomfortable.. I just increase my water.. nothing else has worked.. I also have some fibre powder which you can sprinkle on your food and you can't even taste it..

Hey, you are not alone Sallymarie. I have been using Metamucil once a day and sometimes twice. This has given relief most of the time but I am certainly not as regular as I was before falling pg. I am not complaining though, as I am loving every minute of this little girl inside me. Nicole

    Hi Sallymarie,

For the early weeks in my pregnancy I was SO very constipated to the point of being in extreme pain. When I visited my OB I asked him about what I could do other that what I had been, which was lots of fruit, water, fibre etc, and he recommended "Benefiber". It is a natural fibre powder which you mix with water or juice and drink once a day. I cannot recommend it highly enough. It worked wonders for me and I am now feeling much better. I hope you feel better soon as well.

Pear juice is also good for this problem. It is especially useful when bfing as things like metamucil rely on your liquid intake to work and with bfing your liquid intake is being used for other purposes. Just a tip for down the track

Sallymarie: I totally know what you mean. I tried everything and eventually my Midwife suggested Nulax. It worked wonders. It is all natural but you should check with your ob/midwife before taking it.

I hope you get some relief soon, it is a terrible feeling.

Sally - I've had the same problem. Have you tried using the In Liven product sold through BB? I've found that to be really good, either that or you can buy from the supermarket some stuff called Pysillium Husk, it's in the health food isle, you sprinkle it on your cereal or mix some in with your OJ in the morning and you can't taste it at all - i've found this to be great too and both are completely natural and safe during pregnancy. Good luck hope something works for you soon!

I agree with the beautiful fresh Darrell Lea liquorice and prune juice.

I agree with all of the above too.....try to drink too much orange juice though because it could make your wee really acidic and give you some heartburn. Increasing your water intake is the way to go...if you cant drink too much water straight, prehaps dilute it by adding a little juice.

high fibre diet - I find fibre plus cereal works really well, lots of water, exercise, licorice I like, pear juice, prunes and oranges are also good.
