Gestational Diabetes - when is the onset?

When does gestational diabetes appear if it's going to?

I'm 25 weeks and 2 days, and I had the glucose-tolerance test (the one where you fast overnight beforehand and then drink the sweet stuff and then have blood test done 2 hours after that). We skipped to that test without doing the simpler one because I am overweight and have borderline PCOS, which makes me higher risk for diabetes in general.

Anyway, the result came back as normal, which I'm delighted with, because I've been worrying about it a bit.

But now I wonder: if I'm clear at 25 weeks will I be clear for good now with this pregnancy? The ob didn't suggest that another test might be needed, so I'm hoping that means that it would have shown by now if it was going to show, so I'm OK.

Does anyone know if that's right?

Tenar, Im no Doc of course, but i think you should be fine. If you had the tendency for high sugar I think it would have shown up by now.

I had the test at 18 weeks due to weight, pcos, and high readings while getting checked for something else in hospy. I then did the 2 hr test and failed it. Now, even though I am doing fine with controlling my levels, without insulin, I am still expected to test my blood 4-6 times a day until birth. (not something I would wish on anyone who didnt need it)

If you are still concerned my advice is to eat healthy, low GI foods, in small meals spaced throughout the day, and try to get in some gentle exercise on as many days as you can. This is what Im doing and its controlling my levels really well.

Apparently GD CAN occur at any time during the pregnancy, but the most likely time is 25-27 weeks (or something like that). So my endo ('cos I did have GD) said there is always a risk that they'll miss some GD cases, but I don't think it's a high enough risk that they bother re-testing people unless they show up with a whole heap of suspicious GD symptoms. I know some people on a second/third pregnancy after a PG with GD will be tested much earlier just in case and then again. Given you were all clear, I'd think it would be highly unlikely you'll be tested again. So saying, eating low GI is always a good idea anyway.

i'm in a similar situation to you Tenar

had first GTT at 16weeks, will have another at 26 weeks, and if that one is normal, if anything else shows abnormally, will have a third at around 34 weeks (earlier if needed) - wehn you pee test each appointment, they can see signs of sugars in the pee, so if that showed up, you'd be sent for another one kwim?

    Hi Girls,

on my second pregnancy I KNEW I had Gestational Diabetes by week 7. (Felt like I had at week 30 in preg 1)

I had it during my first pregnancy so I recognised it in my second.
The reason for it being apparent second time around so early turned out to be twins.

It can set in at any time during the pregnancy however it is most common to test mid-way.

If you feel "sugary" there was no other way for me to describe that (like you ate a whole sickly cake) or excessively tired (hard to tell) or need to drink more/wee more (how do you know) then get it checked.

It cant hurt to have a 2 hr GTT.
I think the best advice would be to eat well, low GI where you can for you and the babys sake, do your normal mild excersise and let your GP know if you feel different!

    Goodluck!!
