Hi there
Just wanted to know if any of you had any experience with shingles in pregnancy. I'm 31wks pg, was diagnosed with shingles early this week. I'm now on anti viral medication. The thing is I'm in constant excruciating pain. I took panadol which didn't help. Then I started taking panadeine which helps in a way but at night when the pain is so bad, it doesn't seem to help much. Sometimes the pain is so bad I feel numb. I tried to restrain myself from taking any painkiller as long as I could but the pain was just too much to bear. I have been on panadeine for about 2 days now. Just wondering if anyone out there have had to take panadeine or other pain killer for more than two days? I'm a bit concerned about taking any painkiller for more than a few days.
Not in pg BUT just a few weeks ago I had it. Its meant to last for months mine lasted for 1 wk as I pumped myself with immune building things AND the shingles medication. Which is completely safe while breastfeeding. Call the Royal womans hospitals drug line and they'll tell you if its safe while pg Honestly any drug issue while pg or breastfeeding call them or Rodney whyte...... Ill look for his number and post it if someone doesn't get here 1st
I have had shingles but not when pregnant. I remember that pain its very hard to describe. I just remember it being sobad that I could not even hold a phone up with my left arm or change gears in my manual car as the nerve pain hurt that bad.
Where abouts on your body is it?
Mine was on my right side and wrapped around the shoulder, towards the neck and down the backof my upper forearm.
I found that I got some relief from putting an icepack on it. It seemed to numb the area by keeping it cold.
The actual welts from the shingles went probably within 2 weeks but the pain although not nearly as bad lasted close to a year. Sorry probably not what you wanted to hear but I think it was mainly because if I had pressure on the area (like wearing a bra with bra straps) or a handbag over the shoulder and it would ache.
With the painkillers, I think that the later you are in pregnancy, pain killers seem to be okay (I am talking panadeine and panadol NOT nurofen) as they often give you these in hossy. I can remember them giving me panadeine forte the day before I had DD. Make sure you check with your carer before taking something if you are concerned
Where is your lesion hun? You can get a spray on dressing from the chemist (or your doc should be able to prescribe it). It forms a film over the lesion and stops the air getting to it - which is what causes the pain. But that's only good if its on an area where you can spray IYKWIM?
The only real issue with the panadiene is that the codiene might clog you up a bit. sweetheart, I know how bad it is.
Wow, am so overwhelmed with the responses! Thank you. The lesion is on my left shoulder blade right round to my left breast. I noticed this morning that the rashes seemed to be under control (no more new rashes) but the pain is the one that causes me heartache. Yes and it hurts an awful lot when I wear a bra.
I found wearing a strapless bra with attachable straps helpful, but only attaching a strap to the right side which helped give me support without then putting extra pressure on the nerves on my right shoulder.
You should definitely stick around BellyBelly and have a look around, There is so much info on all things, some great advice and the members here are so supportive of everyone.
