Hyperemesis Gravidarum questions, suffered once now terrified :(

Hi I have some questions for those unlucky ladies who have suffered HG. I am a bit torn at the moment, I had decided after DS3 that there would be no more babies, I suffered HG until 5 months with him and was given Zofran which was a miracle. (I also consider myself extremely lucky to have been able to get well after 5 months!)

On and off I have thought I'd like to give DS3 a sibling closer to his age as his two older brothers are 15 and 17 years older than him.

Right now I'm really thinking I'd like to try for another baby, but I am terrified at the thought of HG again

So I have a few questions.

What is the earliest in your pg you can take Zofran? (It was not mentioned to me at all during the first trimester.)

Did anyone have Zofran work for one pregnancy and not for another?

Has any one had HG in a first but then not in a second pregnancy? (DS3 is the only pregnancy I had HG, normal MS with DS1 and none at all with DS2)

It was suggested to me by a midwife that perhaps it was because DS3 was to a different partner than DS1&2(divorced and re partnered), has anyone else thought this could be true, from personal experience or otherwise?

Did anyone try acupuncture or alternative medicine with a second pregnancy and avoid HG?

I believe i had HG with my DD just from how sick i was constantly for the first 5 months. My second pregnancy started the same way but this pregnancy has been manageable. My sickness is no where as bad.

Perhaps you could speak to somebody about your concerns and see what they suggest.

This probably isn't what you wanted to hear but my sister had HG for the whole 9 mths, she was worse with subsequent pregnancies.

Everyone is different, I guess you won't know until you are pregnant.

Hun, big squishy I am in excatly the same boat as you and it sux . Hate the thought of DD not having siblings yet terror doesnt even describe the fear I have of getting preg again. I dont have any answers as Im in the same place as you.

However I WAS given Zofran from 8 weeks, we tried maxalon from 6 weeks and it did nothing, so I would have been given zofran from 6 weeks had we known that at the time. I was throwing up 12 times a day and I stopped at 37 weeks (DD born 38.4 days). We do have a HG thread on here too, just not sure where it is atm, its been a bit quiet.

Lily Dust I have seen the HG thread, but didn't like to post in there as I'm not actually pg so thought I'd be an intruder sort of Not really needing the support now you know.
Maxalon didn't do anything for me either, except put me to sleep for a few hours, which meant I was at least sleeping and not so aware of being revoltingly sick...until I woke up of course

I was one of those lucky buggers who had it the entire pregnancy. Zofran did nothing for me, so I just threw up up to 20 times a day and sucked it up really.
It was worse with DD too...

I hope that I'm in the minority and lots of people have much better stories than mine.

Hi, Go over to the thread it dosn't matter that your not pregnant atm, you have suffered and are scared it will happen again. Legitimate reson enough I recon.

From what my doctor told me Hg has more to do with your/my hormones and almost like an alergic reaction to pregnancy hormones than partners. ALthough saying that just cause you've had it once dosn't garantee you will get it again.
You know no what it can be like so put into place strategies to help you cope if it was to happen again in pregnancy.
My fingers are crossed that everything will be fine.
My best advise is to sit down with your doctor and have a chat about your concerns and worries about it. There may be something new.
Try the help her site they may have something new medical wise.

I heard somewhere that HG was an over reaction(hyper - obviously) to the pregnancy hormones, but that your brain and body get stuck in a loop. So where the MS would normally subside, you're kind of wired to keep being sick. Don't how much truth there is to that theory, I'm guessing they really don't know, but I'll be looking into lots of areas before TTC.

I had HG with all my girls. Not with DS.
It lasted til 20 - 22 weeks with the girls.

I will never risk that again. I thought I would be safe after DS. I still survived when pregnant with DD3, but my kids were pretty much without a mum for 4 or 5 months. I can't do that to them again.

Im sorry to hear you had the awful HG. I had it in my first two pgs but not in any of my m/cs (just really bad m/s during parts of them). Im interested to hear about it being allergic reaction because I have often thought this.

Clover, That is one big concern I have DS1&2 are old enough to look after them selves for a few months (they're 20 and 18) but I'm worried about DS3

You are definitely welcome in that thread, I started it when I wasn't pregnant but going through the same things you are going through now, just trying to get my head around going through it again. So you are in exactly the right place in that thread
I'm not sure about the subsequent pregnancies thing, I had it first and second time so not really very helpful for you sorry.
But I do wonder if in your case it is mentally a bit tougher because you have experienced good pregnancies and bad ones and have something to compare to, where as some people in the HG thread have only experienced the bad so don't really understand just how much different it can be in the same way you understand and have experienced it IYKWIM.

Hi there,

I had HG with DS1 until 30 weeks. I eventually was put on zofran at 14 weeks when it was that or be hospitalised for dehydration.

With DS2 I wasn't at work, which I think made a huge difference. I just had severe morning sickness that subsided at around 14 weeks. It wasn't HG - yay! When I went to my GP to say that I was pg, she gave me a script straight away for maxalon and said to start taking them as soon as I felt a tiny bit sick and to keep taking them. Then if that didn't work get back to her ASAP to get the zofran (I was keen to avoid zofran as it is so expensive and I wasn't working this pg). She would have given me zofran as early as I wanted it.

GP said that the trick is to stay on top of the nausea - it is much harder to stop feeling sick once it has got to the severe stage than to get in early while it is milder/newer.

To be honest, my DS1 didn't really get neglected much during my 2nd pregnancy as I was still able to lie on the floor to play with him. It was my poor DH who suffered the load of doing all the washing, cooking and ironing while I was sick.

I had HG from 6-16 weeks and tried Maxalon for about 2 or 3 weeks from about 8 weeks pg and then was moved onto my savior zofran! It's eased up since about 16-18 weeks, I'm now 22 weeks and throwing up in the morning and feeling nausea all day but not like it was.

I don't know if we'll go back fora second because of the HG and the effect it had on both DH and me.

Oh you guys are so lucky Zofran didn't work for me. The zofran side effects were just as bad as the hg.

Unfortunatly too many Drs think HG is physological and not metaphysical. More research desperatly needs to be done.

I can not help that I am ill during my pregnancies, I don't want to be sick and I most certanly don't appreciate being told during my last two pregnancies that I didn't want my planned pregnancies and thats why I was sick. After the last Ob said this to me as sick as I was, I sure gave her what for......my Mum was stunned she was with me at the time.

This pregnancy is different......different hospital, different staff, different ob's and different midwifes. Still had to be hospitalised a few times at old hospital, but seams attitudes have started to change. The last nurse to look after me had, had HG so she was super nice, super caring, super special! I was super lucky I think.
small country hospital this time...last time large city hospital. Small hospital dosn't deal with complications so they sent me to large hospital. I was just lucky to have had a nurse stick up for me this time round.
