low iron - liquid iron supplements??

    Hi there,

I'm on iron supplements, and today tried a liquid form, to see if I absorb it better.

    Oh. My. Gooseberries.

I feel so unbelievably sick ... I don't think it's still my morning sickness, because in the back of my throat, I can taste that gross coppery yuckness that you get when you vom up iron pills - so I'm thinking it's the iron.

Has anyone else had liquid iron supplements?

Any tips on keeping them down?

I suspect that this dosage is going to be half way to Werribee in about 5 minutes ...

    TIA

Agreed Olive! Spatone is excellent. You can put it just with water and you only get the tiniest taste that you are drinking something other than water. No constipation either - always a bonus!

ugh ... it just tastes like vomiting iron pills ... which also isn't fun ...

at least when I throw up liquid iron, it's not red, so I'm not worried that I'm actually vomiting blood!!

what one was it that you've taken? I have given ds floravital since he was about 8 months old. I have had floradix before too. I've also heard the Spatone is good too but Floradix also have a great reputation, loads of vegetarians use it and other woman that I know Hope you feel better soon!

I cant tolerate any form of oral iron either so i would have an iron infusion if my iron levels were low enough to warrant it. It involves a day in hospital and 8 hrs of having it slowing infused but once its done you are right then normally and dont tend to need anything else or another one. I recommend trying the other suggestions first though, but if these dont work, talk to your OB about an iron infusion or injections weekly, cos you can have those too.

I take Florvital or Floradix (can't remember which one - the one with no yeast anyway) and I don't think tastes too bad at all - just a bit like prunes or prune juice really. I don't mix it just straight from the measuring cup (I have been known to swig out the bottle - but it does say not to do that on the label)

I can't swallow pills and floradix makes me nauseas so my midwifes gave me iron shots. They were coming a couple of times a week to give me a jab in the bum. I still have big black marks on my arse cheeks that look like bruises. They lasted for nearly two years after the shots when I had them with DD1, am waiting to see how long they last this time. They didn't really hurt any more than you would expect from a big needle poked into your tender cheeks

    It's "Ferro-liquid".

I'm going to try it again tomorrow (with a juice chaser again) but if there's two strikes, it's out ...

    And I'll try something else!

    Thanks, ladies.
