Placenta previa complete with accreta

Hi All,
I am currently 20 wks and have been diagnosed with grade 4 placenta previa and placenta accreta. I have been told by the specialists that I most likely will have to a pre-term c-section and hysterectomy. Has anyone had any experience with these complications? Any advice or experiences that you could share with me would be greatly appreciated.

Please, please seek a second opinion about the hysterectomy. The long term effects of a hysterectomy are massive and not to be taken lightly. there is a video on youtube called

watch it and then use it to inform yourself of the long term effects and use that information to ask your Dr more questions. there might be another way.

I agree with the second opinion in regards to the hysterectomy. have you had a previous section or other uterine surgery? is that where the accreta is?
grade 4 PP's do not move enough from the opening of the cervix to enable a vaginal birth.

What a scary diagnosis for you. Do you know what type it is and how large it is? 2nd opinion is a must.

Good luck I so hope that there is another option.

Whilst it would be terrible to lose your uterus it's better than you not surviving to raise your baby....

Thank you all so much for your replies. I had an emergency c-section with my DS in 2006, the accreta has attached to the scar tissue. I have an appointment on the 25th of this month to discuss my condition with another Dr.
The doctor I'm under now has had experience with these complications before(thank god!) I'll be making it clear that I want every attempt made to save my uterus. If it comes down to it of course I realise it's more important to be around to look after my beautiful kids. It's just a lot to get my head around and I want to be as well informed as possible going into this.

how scary for you!! i second the second opinion on the hysterectomy!

i had a grade 4 previa. scariest thing ever i had to deal with. i went thru almost every emotion you could go thru from 20 weeks until i had my son at 34 weeks. it is scary. i suggest you try and stay away from google tho. does more harm then good! just take it easy and follow the advice from your ob! good luck. feel free to pm me if you want to know anything further or talk some more xx

I would also advise seeking a second opinion with regards to the hysterectomy. It really depends on the exact details of the accreta but this does not always have to result in a hysterectomy.

The good news is that because they have diagnosed you, they know exactly what they will be dealing with so that you and your baby will have the best treatment during and after the birth to maintain your safety. I hope someone on here has gone through the same thing and can give you some more personal advice.

I am so very sorry to hear you have been diagnosed with these complications during what should be a celebrated time.

I would be making it quite clear to the surgeon that everything possible is to be tried before removal of your uterus. I understand that accreta is very serious and can cause severe hemorrhage, but I wonder if the bleeding does occur what they could try before any drastic action. Has your OB had experience in this condition before?
