I have been feeling unwell for a few days and developed a rash on my back. I went to see my GP on Wednesday and she has diagnosed Shingles. I am now on medication and am starting to feel a bit better - not so much pain now. My OB is on holidays until Monday (lucky him) and i am booked in to have a caesarean on tuesday (breech bub). I just had an app with my GP again today and she has told me they most likely won't do the caeser on tuesday now, but postpone it until i am better.. All the imformation i have on shingles is that it can take weeks to go away. Has anyone had shingles before and does anyone have any idea of what they will do?
I've heard it takes about 6 weeks! Dunno if bub can hold on that long! hehe.
I hope you don't suffer too badly with it... my mum was a wreck (not what you want to hear I know, sorry). Perhaps coz you're being treated early it won't last too long?
All the best - and good luck with the birth of your bub too!
Thanks Liz - I have heard some horror stories about it but the pain seems to have really reduced since taking the medication so hopefully they did catch it in time. I think the GP's main worry is that i could give my baby chicken pox when it comes out because it all comes from the same virus. And you are right - there is absolutely no way this baby will stay there for another six weeks!! Would be very overcooked
From what I have heard shingles can take up to a few months to go away. Not completely sure though. I'd wait and see what the Ob says or call the secretary. They might of had this happen before and know. They probably cant tell you though.
Your breastmilk will probably be full of lots of useful antibodies which will help bub. Not sure they could really avoid bub's exposure seeing as you're so close to term.
Recovery from shingles depends on how soon it was treated, so its good you got onto it when you did. Eat lots of oranges and drink lots of orange juice.
Thanks for your replies girls. Spoke to my doctor at 9.01am this morning - nice way to return from his holiday! - and he said it is fine. Breastfeeding will definately help the baby and the rash looks lots better, so its all on for tomorrow!! Thanks for your help - it was greatly appreciated
