Hey all,
I discovered I was pregnant less than two weeks ago. I may be about 12 weeks but waiting to find out from the ultrasound for sure. I suffer from short-gut syndrome and I have been referred to a specialist but am still waiting on the appointment. I was wondering if there is any one else out there that has this condition because any advice would be greatly appreciated. Short-gut syndrome is the result of having 2/3 of my small intestine removed when I was only 3 days old. I suffer from defficiencies in all sorts of vitamins and this is because my digestive system is missing the duodenum that abosorbs all the fat, vitamins and nutrients needed to support my body. The symptoms are very similar to that of IBS, except that I don't readily gain weight. I have also been told that I would probably never get pregnant becuase of this condition, but here I am!
I am worried that the baby will miss out on a lot of what it needs from me, or on the flip side, I will become malnutritioned even more because the baby may take everything from me! It could go either way. I am taking extra vitamins and I have an injection each month of vitamin B12, but not being able to absorb even tablets properly, makes it all the more difficult. I anyone has any advice, it would be great! Thankyou......
