A cup of tea with honey worked for me but if you want to stay away from caffeine I would suggest some pear juice, prunes or a glass of Metamucil.

Pears, pear juice, prunes, prune juice, bran on my weetbix, lots of water. When I got too blocked up, metamucil helped too. But I will say again....lots of water!! In particular a glass of almost-too-warm-to-drink water, with 1/2 a fresh lemon juiced into it. Every morning.

When things got really bad I used a glycerine suppository to get the first blockage out, then took lactose after that when I felt it starting again. I remember being in such pain, that I needed a quick solution. I found it very bad when working in an air conditioned office, as it is easy to not drink as much as I should have as the temperature is cooler.

Pear juice was really good, but I can't drink it any more I have HG so I am limited to what will go in and stay down I'm taking coloxyl and drink as much water as I can manage. Prunes didn't work for me. I am taking meds that are causing the constipation which I think makes it harder to shift.

Things that work that I only need a small amount of are the best bet. Does anyone know if senna is safe during pregnancy?

I have some glycerine suppositories in the cupboard in case I get desperate, someone said the Lactolose wasn't ok when pregnant? If it is I'll give it a go.

OMG I tried everything in the first 12 weeks, I had morning sickness so bad that I had no liquid in my body to make me go - it was literally 17 days between going at one point!!!

If you get bad and you want to 'clear out' then get Microlax from the chemist. It is basically an at home enema but it makes you go within about 10 mind of using it. Perfectly safe to use while pregnant. I used it 2 or 3 times and then my body kicked back into place and started going on its own again.

My GP at the time told me Lactulose was fine.

Found this on a RWH fact sheet:
Laxatives regarded as ‘safe’ during pregnancy
    • Try a fibre supplement like psyllium husk or Metamucil
but they need a few days to work so keep taking them
regularly. Drink plenty of water when taking these.
    • Stool softeners, eg. coloxyl (not coloxyl with
senna though). These may be needed initially
to start your bowel working but should be
    replaced with the above fibres.
    • Lactulose, eg. Actilax, Duphalac
    • Glycerin suppositories

Kiwi fruit can be really good. Let them soften a bit before eating. Usually 2 to 3 a day will help

I tried almost EVERYTHING and nothing worked so i just accepted going once a week, the pain was unbearable at times. Then at 39 weeks an OB gave me a home enema (microlax) and movicol to do/take as he thought me being so blocked up was why i wasn't progressing. I won't lie the enema was not fun and was so awkward to do but it worked a treat and the movicol caused belly pains but it softened everything and got it moving.

I usually love kiwi, I might see if I can still eat it. Microlax seems popular. I did manage a small movement today and feel a little better, hopefully there's more to come. I'm waiting for the evil haemorrhoid to start objecting too, it's been pretty well behaved so far

There are fibre tablets you can get, metamucil ones, and other brands too. I'm pretty sure they're safe during pg.

Special K bran toppers! I add them to daily yoghurt (also good for the tummy system) And 2-3 prunes daily!
Lots of water, so far it's kept the system regular.

Willow, I will have to put my vote in for Microlax too.. I had horrendous constipation with my first child and tried all the juices and grains etc but really the only thing that helped me go was the Microlax.. It works by drawing water into the bowel to soften what is there and make that move.. Good luck, constipation is never a pleasant side effect..

Yep, this was what I used last pregnancy when I got sick and was not drinking or eating right. Like 3littlemokeys said, lots of water really is the best but that is more preventative and not going to help now.
Microlax great too. Used this after breaking my arm and had not gone in nearly 15days because of meds.

I have just used benefibre, which is a fibre powder with no taste or texture that you just add to drinks... It comes in sticks like sugar sachets, and I just mix two of them into a drink before bed, then everything moves as normal the next day without causing cramps You can get it at the supermarket, it comes in a green box near the Metamucil and stuff.
