I'm a 22 year old soon to be single mum. I'm 26 weeks pregnant with my first baby. I found out at 13 weeks that my baby has a birth defect called gastroschisis which means her abdominal muscles haven't formed properly and her intestines are exposed to the amniotic fluid through the hole above the umbilical cord. I will have to be induced 2 - 4 weeks early and she will require surgery within hours after her birth to repair the hole and put her intestines back inside her body. She's also looking at a 4 week stay in hospital. Doctors say this is a fairly common thing these days, about 1 in 5000 births and most babies born with this condition live happy healthy lives. It's been quite a daunting experience so far and I'm really nervous about what is still to come! I would love to talk to other people who have experienced anything like this and hear their stories!
