I have tested positive for strep B bacteria swab.
Im quite unhappy about that as I will need to stay at the hospital for at least 48 hrs after birth (I was hoping to be able to leave sooner if I was up to it, hospitals are not a happy place for me). Also, I will need to go in for antibiotics which are given through a canulla, at least 2 doses every 4 hrs of labour. Because Im VBACing I was hoping that I would be happy enough at home for quite a while. I am wary of going into the hospital too early.
Im just so annoyed, because I feel this Strep thing is potentially going to add more fuss and possible intervention. If money allowed and I wasnt concerned about uterine rupture, I would be having a homebirth, so having this strep thing come up, added to dealing with a VBAC has got me a bit worried and tense. NOT what I need right now!
Can anyone give me advise or share their experience?
GBS is a bit controversial - many hospitals no longer even test women anymore because you can test + one day and then - the next. As far as "policy" goes remember that's all it is. If you want to refuse to have the AB's refuse it. If you want to stay at home in early labour then do it hun. I tested + with Izzy and then had a test with James that was neg, but get this, they wanted me to have the AB's every 4 hours anyway. I said that I didn't want them, the midwife quietly agreed with me, put it on my file that I was informed, and refused. She said we could monitor bub for temp at every feed anyway to make sure all was ok. You could do that at home anyway, monitor temp and if you are concerned get bub checked out. Women who test neg can have a bub that is affected by GBS that's the thing so they do have to cover themselves, but just because you test + doesn't mean bub will definitely get it. Good luck deciding what to do hun, and no matter what don't let it make you feel like you won't have a successful VBAC!!
