Amy have you ever had a lap? Have they ruled out abdominal adhesions (I remember you mentioning the painful sex before)?

No I haven't had a lap. My GP and Gyn have never suggested it. What sorts of things do they look for? The last time I went to the gyn for the painful sex she said it was thrush that had blocked the glands which was causing the pain. I took diflucan once a week for a month and used a cream she prescribed (kenacomb). At one point it seemed everything was ok but it's just gone back to the way it was. I've never had this spasming before though. Do you think they may be linked?

ETA: Raven I am on the pill so I don't ovulate.

you do ovulate on the pill, it just produces something that stops the egg implanting on the wall of the uterus

i was having similar symptoms and it ended up that i hat cysts on my ovaries!!!!
im not saying thats what it is but it sounds very similar....

Perhaps I have been misinformed but I thought the pill tricks your body into believing it's pregnant - therefore you do not ovulate. And a period is actually just a 'withdrawal bleed'. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

In any case, I haven't had these pains before - and I have been on the pill for 8 years.

The Pill is designed to interfere with several normal functions of fertility in order to make a woman 1) unable to conceive due to temporary sterility or sperm immobility, and/or 2) unable to carry a pregnancy to term (an early abortion).
This process can be accomplished in various ways.

Suppressing Ovulation: When a woman ovulates, hormones released from the pituitary , a gland located at the base of the brain, stimulate her ovaries to ripen and release an egg. The combination pill usually interrupts the release of these pituitary hormones resulting in no egg being released from the ovary, thus preventing pregnancy from occurring. With no egg available for fertilization, the woman is chemically sterile. The progestin-only pill, however, has a weaker effect. It generally does not suppress ovulation.1
Inhibiting Implantation: Another important aspect of fertility is the process by which the lining of the uterus is replenished and maintained. After an egg is fertilized, it normally implants in this lining (endometrium), drawing nourishment and sustenance. The progestin component of the combination pill and the progestin-only minipill cause the inner lining of the uterus to become thin and shriveled, unable to support implantation of the embryo(newly fertilized egg).2
Impeding Sperm Migration: Preceding ovulation, a woman’s cervix produces a watery mucus through which sperm swim to meet the egg. The mucus also provides nourishment to sustain the life of the sperm cells. This mucus thickens under the influence of a progestin and so impedes sperm migration.3

i have got abdominal adhesions from a bowel op and i to have pain alot and painful sex unfortunately (i know what you mean bout being young and having a normal sex life) im 20 so do understand.
a gynae will prob do a lap and ultrasounds to find the cause.
TMI ALERT iam on the pill and still bleed continously but i have pcos and am in pain anyway.
you dont need to see a gp specialising in womens health just go to your gp explain whats happening and ask for a referal to a gynae.

i was having sharp pains on my right side (i had cysts on both sides but the right one was alot bigger 4.5cm) umm everytime i had sex i would get sharp pains in either side and the spasms that i felt were like the ones you described (like your eye twitching)
it started off just like a little bit of cramping and gradually got worse...

Laura how did they find your cyst? Ultrasound?

I used to get heaps of UTI's a few years ago and eventually they sent me for an ultrasound and they checked everything. All turned out to be fine. That was three years ago now.

I'm definitely making an appointment with a different GP.
