it was just a thought - if you're going to need this surgery and you're looking at 18 months just to get a consult in the public system, then onto the public wait list for surgery... if you other option is paying for private all the way... basic singles hospital cover would still have an excess but it would cover some of the cost. i'm contemplating it given i may have to have surgery again and don't currently have PHI
My appt is tomorrow - i'm kind of nervous.. not 100% sure why.
I am going to ask about costs to go private IF i require surgery (which i am 100% sure i will) also if there is anything i can maybe do in the interim while i am on the public wait list or if there is any way he can bump up my referral in the public... considering it is to see him anyway IYKWIM
I doubt that will happen but maybe he can have me transferred OFF the non-urgent list as it is affecting every day life.
Thanks babe, will let you know how i go.
Am taking my x-rays from 2006 AND this year as i would love to ask if there is a difference b/w now and then (when i should have had surgery).
Am quite nervous so poor MG is probably going to be getting random texts from me, will be good to debrief with her afterwards if time permits.
Thanks for asking OP and for the well wishes girls.
Appt was ok, not quite what i had expected and i'm a little drained TBH, have had to book a CT scan and an MRI as he thinks there is a little more going on and he wants to know 100%.
He said it's not as straight forward as he would like and that he needs to know what he's dealing with.
There was a student in with him and he found it all quite interesting - glad someone got some joy out of it.
I was basically hoping i would go in, he would say pin & screws and rush me up the public list with a brace in the meantime and i would be done, knowing i have to wait isn't an issue it's more a little scary that he wants more info and thinks it's not so straight forward - i get nervous about crap like that and the expense of the scans and the like.
The only bonus out of it is i get to see Mother Goose another 3 times over the next month now
Thanks so much for today hun, it was great having a chat, some lunch & a laugh after my appt to keep my head straight.
My pleasure! Don't panic about the extra images. Any decent doctor would request more I'm not in the office tomorrow because I have to go to a conference but I will find out that other thing for you on Tuesday
Went back to the specialist today with my CT and MRI results and was basically given 2 options.
1. leave it as is and it will get worse over time (as expected)
2. Surgery - more complex than he first though as he would need to shorten 1 bone and put in a plate & screws (as he expected) BUT the other bone has actually rotated and is also out of alignment, to fix this he said he would have to re-align (rotate), break and set the other bone which is something that has only been done once before at the angle mine is on.
He basically said he can't guarantee surgery will actually fix the problem and wont guarantee it will stop the pain, he could only do it in the hope of it not getting a lot worse over time.
So my options are to pay for private surgery (they are sending me a quote) OR wait for the public wait list, no brace will help as he said the position of my wrist is not suitable to be kept stable as it will just aggrivate the injury.
So we are looking at close to $5000 or more for the surgery as it would require 2 plates aswell as the hospital & Dr's etc so i think we might just wait for the public surgery, aside from not having $5000+ to spend on surgery i'm not sure i can spend thatr money knowing that the surgeon himself is not certain it will actually make it pain free - he actually advised he doubts i would ever be pain free
I'm sorry hon I know you were hoping for better news. I think it makes sense to wait on the public list given the uncertainty of the outcome of surgery. I just hope it doesn't take too long to get through the list - did he mention anything about bumping you up the list? And hopefully he puts a mark so that he can do the surgery as a special interest case.
He can't bump me up the list as even though the referral was adressed to him in the pub lic system it just goess into the filing cabinet along with the others. I don't think he can even request it be moved from the non-urgent list
Re: Wrist Cast & Children - How Did You Do It?
Huge hugs huni. I really hope you get the op soon. I have got metal in my foot from a op 10 years ago that had grown to 6 inches and fused bones together. I still have pain now and its frustrating. Can they give you anything to help the pain while you wait? Xxxx
