Sometimes I smell things, smoke .. but I put that to the fact that we have 3 fireplaces and drafts, a fragrance , something a bit different.
Today, while I was sitting on the couch I got a really really strong horse smell. Like I had my nose firmly planted on one of my boys and deeply inhaled. The boys are in the paddocks close to the house BUT I have never smelt them like that before AND the wind is blowing in the opposite direction.
I think, scientifically, they are called "scent memories".
I don't think there's any way to explain them, but I love having them.
I was sitting on the couch with all the windows open - and I live on a noisy and very un-peaceful highway - and I suddenly could smell damp earth and burning sugar. It was just like being back in Mackay as a child, so weird. I hadn't even been thinking of it lately!
I used to get a really strong rose-incense smell around. Not often, but when it happened, it would be 2 or 3 times over a few days, until I started paying attention to whatever info was coming through, then it would stop.
However, some people experience smell "hallucinations" (especially unpleasant smells like petrol, burning smells) as a symptom of neurological disorders or even mental illness. So like all things, it pays to be aware of the context, and if there's something not right about it, get it checked out.
A couple months back I was sitting on the couch on my own and all of a sudden I could smell my grandpops house, his house had a very distinct smell, it was really comforting. he has been dead 15 years and I haven't smelt that smell since then but I thought of him and missed him immediately.
I've been curious as to what it was!
