Mirena questions

Now that DS2 is 5 weeks old I am thinking about contraception as OB will ask me next week. I have been thinking about IUD but not 100% sold on idea due to things I have read on here and things others have told me, saying that I have heard good things also.

So what I want to know is:

If no AF yet do I need to wait till it returns to have it inserted or can it be done before it returns?

Can you drive afterwards or do you use any anasthetic that stops you driving?

Do you feel it once in place??

Does it hurt going in??

Do you feel it while DTD??

Hmm I think that is all for the momment feel free to tell me what ever you think I should know!! Not keen on Mini pill, depo or implanon.

Hi feeb. I had my mirena put in on 18th November and so far it has been fantastic. AF hadn't returned for me and OB had no problems at all putting it in. For me I had it put in in my OBs office on their table. There was a tiny little pinch (not painful but you noticed KWIM?) at the very beginning but I didn't even notice it was done. My OB pushed his trolley away and I asked him if he had forgotten something but nope it was all over. They offered me some panadol afterward but I didn't even need that. I didn't drive for 30 to 45 minutes after just to be safe but I felt fine. Some women do faint due to cervical shock (which is when something is passed through the cervix). I had cramps for that afternoon and felt a little bit off for a few days (and apparantley I was b!tchy according to DH) but now it is awesome. I spotted on and off for 8 weeks but nothing now. I have had no troubles with DS refusing to B/F (apparantely some babies wean). I can't feel anything now it's in. If I go searching I can feel the wires in my vagina and DH is mentioned that he can feel them when we DTD so I am going to have them trimmed when I have my check up.

This is my experience only, but FWIW:

If no AF yet do I need to wait till it returns to have it inserted or can it be done before it returns? You don't need to wait, I had it put in 10 wks after DD's birth.

Can you drive afterwards or do you use any anasthetic that stops you driving? I drove myself there and home (with DD - who slept in the pram during the procedure!). It's usually done by a gyn in their own rooms.

Do you feel it once in place?? No.

Does it hurt going in?? The procedure was uncomfortable, but not painful. Bit of cramping afterwards. My gyn used a local anaesthetic on my cervix.

Do you feel it while DTD?? No, but DP says sometimes he can 'just' feel the strings. My gyn says he leaves the strings a bit longer because otherwise he has had men talk about the strings jabbing them while DTD! It hasn't interfered with DTD.

Hope that helps. I've had mine for nearly four years and it's soon making it's exit!

I haven't heard babies would wean, in fact, I heard the exact opposite, that it was more suitable for bfing because of the low dose (local nature) of the IUD. It certainly hasn't affected any woman I've spoken too in terms of milk supply, etc. I know of other issues, but not this one.

I think you'd be best getting the low down from your gyn on possible issues, just like any contraception there's things to be aware of. But everyone is different and what has happened to one woman may not with another. Avoid Dr Google!

How common is cervical shock? Has anyone ever had it? Was it awful? I am just interested in the chances of it happening. The whole thing sounds a bit scary to me.

Does it stop periods completely?

Is there anything else to know about them?

FWIW the women I did know who had problems experienced them quickly (within a week or two) and they were resolved by removing the Mirena. None experienced any long term ill effects.
